"No the reticket is only about $150 - since the only possible way to make it from one to another in time is a car service at about $150."

"Sunnyon Sep 5, 12 at 5:58pm
Unfortunately, the reticketing is really $300. I made 2 phone calls to American Airlines and the AA agents told me the price."

Sunnyon, nytraveler was just doing the math for you
If it costs $300 to rebook versus paying $150 to take a car service from JFK to EWR (the only logical way, we all agree) then the net difference is "only" $150.

So you need to decide if is it worth $150 to avoid this potential problem

If he bought this all on ONE ticket, regardless of who the seller is, I would contact THEM, not AA, and ask what the fee is to change the flights. You also need to know what happens if he does miss the flight, how much THAT will cost if anything??? When's the next flight out of EWR? You can't imo make a decsion until you knownthose answers. From whom did he buy the ticket?

What I find surprising is when looking at flight options b/w BCN and DFW on kayak.com NOT ONE offers the routing you're describing. Most go from BCN thru Heathrow into DFW.

You should also know LGA is MUCH closer to JFK. If you decide to spend money to change the flight, it would be much easier to go from JFK or LGA. Forget about Newark.

Why change airports at all? There are a ton of flights from JFK to DFW - they should just book one of those.

If you have to spend $300 just to get from JFK to EWR, why not just spend the $300 on another ticket from JFK to Dallas?

If there are no flights after midnight, look into sleepinginairports.net and find JFK. There appears to be a lounge where he can spend the night for $45.

There is quite a bit of information online for an easier transition than the complicated way that things have been set up for him.

Good luck!
