Authenic Cattle Ride

My husband and I are excellent Western style riders and have been on many backpacking horseback riding trips in the West. We are interested in an authenic cattle drive and are interested in hearing about any that someone might have taken and with which ranch? We would like it to be a "real" cattle drive and not just a few hours of riding a day. Any ideas? Txs.

Dear roma:

I have never been on a cattle drive, but Jack Varian & his family have cattle drives on their ranch outside of Cholame, CA. This is east of Paso Robles along Hwy. 41/46. Google it and good luck.

Big Bend Ranch State Park in Texas has a cattle round-up/drive each year (possibly twice a year). Participants are responsible for going out and rounding up the cattle and driving them back to the ranch, and have the option of sleeping out on ranch or coming back to the bunkhouse each night. From what I've read, you'd be working sunrise to sunset. Look here: http://www.lajitasstables.com/cattle.htm

In the same area is Cibolo Creek Ranch, which offers cattle drives as one of its customized activities. Their website is: http://www.cibolocreekranch.com/index.htm

Also check out Equitours and Hidden Trails. Both offer tons of riding vacations all over the world. I've done one thru H.T. in southern Spain and it was the trip of a lifetime.
