Austin hotel near UT...

ok so I'm making reservations for our stay in Austin while touring UT. Any rec's for a good hotel. We'd like to use Marriott points... Also, what is the most desirable area around UT streetwise--using google maps to search for the hotels.
Thanks!!!!

I'm looking at Mariott's web site and I don't see any Mariotts very near campus. If you are willing to drive to campus you might consider one of the Mariotts downtown, either the one on 4th street or at the Convention Center.

If you need to be within walking distance there's a very nice DoubleTree at 303 W. 15th St.

PS If you stay downtown and you don't feel like driving, there are a zillion city buses that run between downtown and campus.

We too had similar plans to tour UT and Concordia {4 blocks away} - - we stayed at the Doubletree {Hilton pts} on W. 15th Street; clean, quiet, reasonable for the 2 rooms and the warm Cookies are sooo good!

Transportation was on foot and riding the local "Dillo" - -UT is a mini-city - -allow time !

DD chose Concordia - as a freshman, we parents said no to a car - so she was on foot to do many things and saw/learned much. Shuttles to/from the dorms were reliable to the airport; hospitals/library/music venues are nearby

Chirstine, I was wondering about Mariott Capitol, as I didn't see it on their web site either. I wonder if it changed hands? If it is still a Mariott, it will be perfect for you.

Hello Christine65,

I too was curious about the Marriott Capitol here in Austin. So I just placed a call to them at the number I found on the web.

It is now a Sheraton. They recently bought the hotel from Marriott.

Will you have a car while you're here? If so, then you really don't have to be at the closest hotel to UT. Probably one of the Marriott sites would be just fine, with a car.

You might also try Priceline. I've used them several times for guests, and they've generally won one of the hotels right downtown for a good price.

Of course, if you're coming during football season, that's a whole 'nother story!

Happy travels!

Yah, I checked on the Marriott at the Capitol also, thanks for the info.
We will have a car so don't have to stay real close. Husband wants to use Marriott points or at least stay in one to earn points. So will probably do the Conv. Ctr. Marriott.
I've about used up his points on this trip as we will be staying 7 nts. in different hotels around Texas.
