Where's what in Austin

I am planning a trip to Austin (never been b4) and was going to stay at the Amersuites (7522 North IH-35). How close is this to sights? ie. day time and night time things to do.

I will be with a mixed group of early 30's and we like being close to the night action (within walking distance if possible) - will this Amerisuites be convinient? What are the good pubs/clubs to go to that don't have too many 'younguns'?

We will have a car with us, but would like to make our way around the city without it. Are we going to find the public transport close by to us?

Thank you for you help! IF

Most of the action is on 6th street in downtown Austin so you will probably need the car. Not sure where you will find action in any city where there are not "younguns". I would just get a taxi instead of a bus if you're doing night life and want to not drink and drive.

6th street and around there is definitely the place for clubs and night action. There will probably be a mix between 'younguns' and '30 somethings'. It's probably 6-7 miles from where you're staying but once you get downtown it's easier to walk. I suggest the same: a taxi.

Amerisuites is a few miles north of downtown and you will need a car or a cab. If you want a hotel near downtown withing walking distance, you need the Sheraton (6th street), Radisson (Ceasar Chavez), Omni (8th/Brazos), Driscoll, Four Seasons (Ceasar Chavez), La Quinta ("at the capitol" - 11th St?) Marriott and maybe even the Hyatt. The closest are the Omni, Driskoll and Radisson, Four Seasons. Cheapest probably the La Quinta and Marriott.

The better nightlife for a little bit older would be the Warehouse District. That is between Congress and Lavaca between 2nd and 8th streets. Sixth Street is east of Congress, between IH 35 and Congress ave. While there are still college students either place, some think the Warehouse district is a bit more upscale. However, there are less bars to go to, but more restaurants. You can walk from one are to the other easily.

Parking is the pits in Austin in these areas on weekends. If at all possible, I'd try to stay somewhere within walking distance or take a cab. Amerisuites to downtown should be about $7. Just a guess.

When are you visiting?

Thanks for the replies! Taxis sound like the go then. Either that or relocate to a downtown hotel ... I will see what the others want to do.

We are planning on visiting the 21st/22nd Feb. Do you know of any special festivities for this weekend that we should be aware of?

Thanks again. IF
