Aug 2008 Cape Cod trip - need advise on hotels as I am not familar with the area
Hi,
We are looking at the Cape and one of the islands for a weeks vacation this august. On the cape I am looking for a hotel that is out around the elbow and on the ocean with a beach to walk. I am searching on tripadvisor but I thought I would check here also. I am looking to spend $300 to $500 a night.

Chatham Tides is in a great spot. Another resort that looks nice, though not as elegant as Chatham Bars is Pleasant Bay Village Resort. There are several nice inns in Chatham, like the Captain's House, but you would need to visit one of public beaches -- like Hardings. You might even consider a week's stay in Chatham, with a day trip to Nantucket. There is a ferry from Harwich Port with several daily departures.

I second the recommendation for a day trip to Nantucket. You can see all on a tour (Gail Nickerson conducts small, personal, tours) and have a nice dinner. More and more, Nantucket is overrun with summer folk, day tripers, and vacationers and rates for accomodations (with minimum stay requirements are outrageous, along with the cancellation policies.
It was 20 years before we got around to visiting Martha's Vineyard, and we much prefer Nantucket.
We love visiting Nantucket in June or September, but avoid it in mid-Summer - but a day trip would be fine.

If you don't mind staying a bit further out on the Cape you will have lots of beach to walk...in fact, if you start in Eastham, at Coast Guard Beach, you can walk all the way to Provincetown without getting your feet wet...sort of the way Henry Thoreau did! (No breaks in this pristine, protected National Seashore barrier beach between Eastham and Provincetown) However, because the ocean beach on the outer cape is protected, you will not find any hotels in the National Park on the beach. In fact, the only lodging that I know of that is actually in the park overlooking Nauset Marsh and the Atlantic is the Fort Hill Bed and Breakfast. Check them out if you think you might not mind staying on the outer cape about 20 minutes from Chatham.
