Offer for TEN THOUSAND MILES just for renting a car for one day. Must rent by Aug 1 , details on the Delta website. Weekend cars are sometimes as low as $20 in some cities, so renting Sat july 26 can get you lotsa miles for little money. Avis or Budget. Great offer if you live near an airport location.

Yeah, lots of miles that you may be unable to use as airlines up the restrictions and add fees, etc. And $20 to rent a car probably doesn't include tax (usually heavy in many places), so it might not be worth it just to go rent a car to buy miles you may never use.
USAir or one of the "major" airlines sent me an offer recently for 25,000 miles for signing up for their credit card, with fee waived the first year. I didn't even bother. Not worth the trouble of inflexible scheduling, fees for baggage, fees for booking, sometimes fees (USAir) just for soft drinks, etc.

I went to the site and found where you can get 9,999 miles (close-enough to 10,000) for renting Avis or Budget. However, $48 (not including add on taxes, fee's etc) was the cheapest I could find. Granted it was a mid-week day, but Las Vegas airport has very cheap car rentals (last time I paid $25 a day (not including taxes, etc) for an Explorer.

One Delta SkyMiles offer that did work out: I got an email about a special offer to SkyMiles members from Shutterfly . . . a free 8x8 20-page photobook. Yes, I had to pay shipping and handling, but it was perfect timing. I wanted to send a friend with no computer photos of our recent vacation together. Now I'll send her this made-up album of 70-80 photos. I'd also been interested to try one of these service to check quality. Now I've managed it for $8.66.

No, there is no requirement that you have a flight.
You must book the car rental through the Delta website, meaning that you can't use any discount codes...but other than that there is no "catch".
Delta had similar 5000 miles offers earlier this year. I rented a car from Budget on a Saturday, for $20.87 including all taxes, and by Thursday the 5000 miles was showing in my skymiles account. Best I could do this weekend was $28 for 9,999 miles.
Together the $49 in car rentals gets me over the top for a free flight.
