AAdvantage - can miles be refunded?
I've tried looking on the AA website, but can't find any details about this. Let's say I redeem my miles for a ticket far in advance and then later my plans change. Can an award travel ticket be re-booked? Are there fees/penalties involved? Or if I decide to cancel the trip altogether, do I automatically lose those miles?

Rules vary by airline. Typically, the mileage is redeposited back into your account for a fee - i.e. $100 and the tax paid upon booking is refunded to your credit card. With Delta, you can take the exact same trip anytime within 1 year and pay no change penalty to the reward ticket.

"Changing Award Tickets
A $100 USD change fee (subject to change without notice) will apply for any confirmed change to a MileSAAver Award ticket.
* Exception: MileSAAver Award tickets for which the only confirmed change is to the date and/or time will not incur the change fee. "

When I booked, the reduced mileage award was still called PlanAAhead or something like that and they wanted $100 to change to a flight 2 hours later. I'm glad to see that they're making an exception for date/time changes now.
