Asheville & Bele Chere
Any tips on parking for Bele Chere? We're planning to stay downtown later than the last shuttle runs, so we're hoping to find somewhere reasonably close to downtown with dirt cheap or free parking.

What you might want to do is exit off 240 onto either Montford, Merrimon or Charlotte Street and head away from town. The first few blocks will be an easy - 10 min- walk into town and there is unrestricted on the street parking in most of these areas. Many businesses will be open so it may not be an option to park in their lots. Others will use their lots to generate income - First Baptist(Large church w/ very visible dome - Merrimon or Charlotte St. exit) has a large lot and charges a fairly nominal amount to park for the day but you will need to get there fairly early in the day to insure yourself a spot.

Bele Chere is a HUGE 2.5 day street festival with lots of free music - it's the biggest thing like this in the South. People come from all over the region. There is a competitive selection process or raffle to have a craft booth as well as any other type of concession stand. It is a little too crazy sometimes for me at nite and often too hot with the crowds during the day time.
