Auntiemaria, I am glad I am not the only one who has done this! First, I should say I have been happily married for 21 years. But, once about 5 years ago I was going through my mini mid-life thing (basically a lot of stress). My husband was traveling and working WAY too much and we have two children. I hit a last straw when he could not get off one night to come home and left me to be in two places at one time. When he came home I had my bags packed and said. "here, you hold the fort down while I take care of myself for awhile". It was mother's day weekend! I left on Friday and came back on Mother's day totally refreshed. I did not know where I was going when I left, but ended up heading to Savannah GA. Loved it there! Great weekend getaway. It was my first trip of many! By the way, although my hubby is a real gem, he now understands his priorities and his wife's tolerance level better now!

Yes, a few years ago, we had two kids in school and were expecting a baby in mid-June. We weren’t sure how soon the baby (or me) would want to travel, so we decided to skip the usual summer vacation and go later. But I just had a bad feeling that we weren’t going to be able to get away later. Then the baby arrived, didn’t mind car trips, and was generally easy-going.

The week before the older kids were going to start school, I called my husband and asked if he could take a few days off starting the next day, got on the internet, and planned a driving trip to Lake Michigan. We had so much fun we added an additional day after we got there. We had never been there before, and I think part of the fun was feeling like we were all on an adventure together.

Yep... working in the travel industry has allowed us to go shopping for the day at the Mall of America, get a breath of fresh air in the Rockies for the day and have a fresh Chicago style pizza in Chicago and still be home for Saturday Night Live.
I have been encouraging my daughter to do this sort of thing her whole life...
She is NOT in the travel business but site59.com has opened the door for her.
She now waits for that perfect opportunity to check the specials and heads out for weekend jaunts at the drop of a hat!
I think it's wonderful because there is no time for my usual obsessing about details!

Only one trip where I left the same day I decided to take a trip. Back in late 80's, before Eastern went out of business. Lived in Atlanta, worked for Nortel and decided to visit one of my customers that I had been talking to over the phone for 5 years, but never actually met. Customer worked for Southern Bell in Miami, so I drove to the Atlanta Airport with a dufflebag full of clothes and walked up to the Eastern counter and asked the agent how much for the next flight to Miami. She got me a roundtrip fare for less than $200.00 roundtrip. I flew to Miami and when there, called the customer and told them I was in town for the weekend. The customer put me up in the spare bedroom and we had a great time

In late June 1994, Nortel closed it's Stone Mountain (Atlanta) plant and layed off everyone. I received a severance package that basically gave me 8 months of continuous pay. After July 4th with family, I hit the road with a rental car and a Rand McNally. I drove west and hit practically every National Park out there. I visited every state except Washington and Oregon, put 17K miles on the rental car (imagine the looks I got when I turned it in.... but free miles are free miles) and was gone for 7 weeks. I picked up the booklets from the different motel chains and before leaving in the morning, would decide where I wanted to be that evening, get out the motel booklets and call ahead and reserve for that evening. BEST vacation I've ever taken.

Also, in 2002, I was watching the Travel Channel and because of 9/11, the travel industry was having major sales to spur travel. A commercial came on for a 2 week trip to Australia or Australia/New Zealand or A/NZ/Fiji. For less than $1800.00. I wrote down the 800 number and called the next day and booked my trip. I didn't leave for another 3 weeks, but that was pretty spur of the moment as well. Had to get an Aussie Visa, but you can do that online and it is instant.

Well, by the time I get up, make my bed, shower, have my coffee and check the obituaries to make sure I'm not listed, it would be too late to make plans to leave that day.
But I envy you. Sounds like fun.

That's the great thing about having a motorhome. Last minute weekend trips happen very often.

To Patrick, the last time we did a spur of the moment overnight camping trip we didn't even decide until noon to go. We were on our way and hiking by 3 BTW, this was just last month!

We have done this a few times and I mujst say that even though I love looking forward to a trip...last minute travel is sooooo much more fun. You may think planning is fun until you try this every now and then. Doing anything last minute is so much more of an adventure, discovering as you go is lots of fun!

We live in San Francisco, and in October 2003 my wife was precluded from substantial air travel due to what appeard to the doctors to be a large kidney stone fragment that had formed but not passed yet--air travel might dislodge it. I was dying to go to europe again.

Anyway we were to attend a wedding in Boston, and I assumed I would be going alone. The week before the wedding, my wife got an xray that determined that the fragment had broken up and passed without her even knowing it!

I quickly gave her a southwest award certificate that allowed her to fly on a moments notice and she joined me at the wedding in Boston, a day or two after I got there.

We had already begun discussing "what if we go from the east coast to europe"? We went to the suburban public library after the rehearsal dinner to check for last minute flights to France or Italy on the internet.

Long story short, we found a Swiss national air sale that allowed us to fly from newark to Nice France for $600 per person with 1 day advance purchase. We got a car in Nice and spent 10 days touring the area, travelling from Lucca Italy to Aix-en-Provence France.

Along the way I was the one who ended up having my own medical emergency, but it was still a wonderful trip.

Must be nice to have that kind of money to blow on last minute tickets.

jor, I thought one of the advantages of last minute travel is getting great last minute prices.
