Any advice on these NYC hotels?
Going to NYC in early Dec.'05--has anyone had a favorable stay at the Travel Inn Hotel, Hotel 17, or the Newton Hotel??? If so, what was your opinion and how close is a subway station?
Thanks!

I stayed at the Travel Inn many years ago and have heard the neighborhood has improved since then. It was a fine, budget hotel that was walking distance to Times Square. I believe it is about a block and a half to the nearest subway and three long blocks to Times Square.
I checked tripadvisor.com for reviews on these hotels and all 3 are close to subway stops. They are all budget hotels so I wouldn't expect 5 star service or amenities. The Travel Inn and Newton seem to get pretty good reviews, the Hotel 17 reviews are more mixed and a few mention a rodent problem. Hope this helps.

Have you looked at the reviews on tripadvisor.com?
You've picked very budget hotels in three completely different areas.
The Travel Inn is on the very far west of midtown - several long blocks from the Times Square subway station.
The Newton is on the upper west side - a fairly upscale residential area - right next to the Broadway line subway. But this is a former SRO (welfare) hotel frequented primarily by super budget european tour groups.
Hotel 17 (of which I know nothing) is on east 17th - not quite so convenient for the subway - since you need to go over to Union Square but still - not more than 4/5 blocks or so.

For clarity the Travel Inn is located exactly two blocks (the long ones) from the subway at 8th and 42nd. Travel Inn is at 10th and 42nd. One nice thing about it is that there are tons of good and rather inexpensive neighborhood restaurants of all types on 9th and 10th within short walking distance of the hotel.

My cousin stayed there last summer with her family and only had nice things to say about it. The room was very good size and they had 2 adults and 3 kids in the room. One thing is that it is very quiet at night, since you are out of Times Square, and very close to a police station. There is also a deli/restaurant on site as well.
If you are driving in, there is also free parking, so that would also save quite a bit.
Have a wonderful time while you are here.

Of the three the Newton is the closest to the subway, less than one block away. Subway station is an express stop and the express train will take about 8 minutes to Times Square. The local takes about 12 minutes. Also more than 10 restaurants within a less than 10 minute walk.
