Annoying Waiters

I think it is a matter of what you are used to. I moved to Europe a year ago. When first dining in restaurants over here, I found it annoying that the waiters never came by to offer the check. I learned I had to look at them and scribble something in the air to get the check. (They were usually there, at a distance, if I needed them)
I have become used to this now, and prefer to be left alone after the food is served and will let them know when I am ready for the check.
When I visit the States now, it drives me crazy when I am sitting in a restaurant having conversation with friends at the table, and the waiter come over and sticks his head right in our conversation and blurts out, "How ya doin' here? Still workin' on that?"
I could understand if I was looking around (appearing as though I was searching for the waiter), or if I signaled over to the waiter....but to come right up when my friends and I are in the middle of conversation and eating a meal...that's kind of annoying.
