Anchorage Hotels

Will be spending on night in Anchorage after a Cruise. I have three Hotel choices..Ramada Inn downtown, Aspen Hotel, and Hawthorn Suites. Any comments or recommendations on these Hotels would be appreciated.

Is this for this year or next? I'm not familiar with the Aspen, but based on the address shown on its website, and the fact that the Ramada is located away from downtown by the military bases (unless Ramada is building another property downtown), I'd opt for the Hawthorn. We stayed there at Thanksgiving and found it to be fine, nothing fancy, but a good location on the west end of the Park Strip, a decent buffet breakfast, and quiet.

I know you said you have 3 choices, but if there is anyway you can stay at the Captain Cook Hotel, go for it. It is wonderful!

Just so you know, the Aspen Hotel completely burned to the ground Tuesday morning. Check it out at www.adn.com.

I will be visiting Alaska in July for two weeks. Upon arrival, I will be staying at the Millenium Hotel in Anchorage ... any comments on this hotel?

Stayed at the Millenium last July, and thought it was pretty crummy. Room was dirty, service bad, noisy, etc. We were there for a short stay, or I would have complained more, though I did make some suggestions at check-out that they didn't seem very interested in (staff was quite young). The place across the street (maybe Hawthorne Suites) looked newer and a lot nicer.

Well, Millenium doesn't sound too promising. Unfortunately, we've already committed and will be staying there a total of three nights out of our two week vacation. We'll just plan on speaking up if we're not satisfied. Thanks for your post...

Ann, it's definitely not enough to ruin a vacation over, just thought you might want to be warned. Have a great trip!

Used to live in Anchorage, a few years back. I believe the Millenium used to be the Regal Alaskan. IF so, you have nothing to worry about. The Regal/Millenium is really close to the airport and situated on Lake Hood. It is very very Alaskan in flavor, large fireplaces, great lounge, nice rooms. Lobby has lots of stuffed Alaskan animals if you are interested in that sort of thing, but honestly whenever I have stayed there, and my last stay was in November last year, I had no complaints and I have always recommended this hotel to friends traveling to Anchorage. I think you should be fine unless things there have really deteriorated drastically. This is generally considered one of the better hotels in Anchorage.

I know this is too late for Ann, but this place was wonderful: Sleeping Lady B&B. Moderate price, gorgeous new home built by the owners, and the best breakfast in Anchorage! Walkable to downtown locations and the park along the lake too. We stayed there last June before our cruise, along with three other couples (the non B&B types - you should have seen me trying to convince them to stay in a B&B!). Everyone loved it. Here's the URL:

Brenda, Thanks for your message. We'll rest a little easier now, and like I mentioned we'll speak up if things are not to our liking.
