If anybody is going to the Monterey area, Point Lobos is great with kids. You can see a lot of wildlife with minimal effort - no long hikes or anything that will make the kids whine 
Just get out of the car, walk a little ways, and you've got it. Seals and sealions swimming in the ocean, sea creatures in tide pools, deer and rabbits and other animals on land.
