I live in Cali and I would definitely recommend Seaworld fo actually both age types of kids. There is a roller coaster and Shipwreck rapids for the big kids. And interactive play areas for the small ones.

Legoland is a great choice. Your kids will love to pretend to drive. (They have seperate versions of this attraction for younger and bigger children. Plus they give out little driver's licenses!) You can go on that Knight chair thingy ride where you can select levels based on height and age. If your kids can't go on the ride they can try and blast water at you. Also they have a cool Indiana Jones attraction.

Universal Studios is great if you like old movies. I haven't been there in a while so check out this website.

Acadia National Park, the Statue of Liberty (even if you don't go onto the island - the view from the Staten Island ferry is awesome), Niagara Falls, the Franklin Institute and the Liberty Bell in Philly, the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, the dinosaurs in the Museum of National History, the National Aquarium in Baltimore, any beach if you are from a place that doesn't have ocean access.

In my neck of the woods, it's Niagara Falls. And the wonderful parks (many Olmstead parks, Letchworth) and many trees in western New York. and Chicken Wings!

Add to Baltimore the B&O railroad
Sesame Place in Pennsylvania
Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA
Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY
(haven't been to the others)
Gettysburg (hallowed ground)
Arlington Cemetary (JFK site) and Lee's mansion
Beaches (all over)
Churches and Shrines
A train ride that passes through the heartland of the US
The Coca Cola museum in Atlanta

I took my kids everywhere via car trips (to visit family who live all over the country). What they remember the most at that age is the pool at the hotel. LOL

CAOH52,

My appologies. Please nominate your favorite amazing place in your region of the country

Wonder what the OP meant by region. Close to my house, my state, my neighboring states?

Within a 4 hour drive: Yosemite National Park

Within a day drive: Grand Canyon National Park, Zion National Park, Bryce National Park

Within a two day drive: Yellowstone NP, Arches NP, Captiol Reef NP, Dinosaur National Monument and Canyonlands NP.

But if I had to pick one place in the US that I have been that is worth taking my children to, I'd still stay Yellowstone.

No apology neccessary, utahtea! Just wanted to point out that the reason I didn't mention Yellowstone wasn't because I don't agree that it's a great place to take kids! (Or because I haven't been there.) It is! I just don't happen to live in that area of the country.

In Michigan - Sleeping Bear Dunes, Mackinac Island, and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are all amazing!

Most of the Lake Michigan shoreline is worth visiting. I am not as familiar with east side, but we did enjoy an evening in Greektown of Detroit and ride on the people mover.

The view from the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron is amazing

Any national park.

A lake front cabin in the Adirondacks where they can paddle around, fish, and run wild with other kids.

Kids love to camp. (Moms on the other hand...not so much maybe.)

Genesee Country Museum.

New York City.

There is no better place to take your kids in the summer or winter than the Wilderness in the Wisconsin Dells. It is both indoor and outdoor water parks that are equally amazing. We live in Chicago and make the trip every two years my 11, 9 and 4 year olds love it but it is just as much fun for adults. The Dells is more kid friendly and more fun than anywhere in the country. We have stayed and several water parks there but the Wilderness is like a city that you don't even have to leave!

With kids being constantly plugged into electronics today, I think the best experience you can give them is to visit one of our fantastic national parks. There is no TV, no internet, no cell phone service (usually). Just nature and time to connect again as a family.

Adult DS & his family took his 3 1/2 yo camping in Yellowstone this past summer. It was a family reunion on DIL's side. They all had a ball & GS learned so much about nature & animals. He loved naming the animals he/they saw. Also he kind of became the map handler/tour guide, so learned a bit about that as well.

I agree with taking kids out into nature - absolutely. National Parks are great, but don't forget that there are tons of wild places that aren't national parks and are wonderful. There are the national forests, state parks and beaches, state forests and reserves, county parks, etc. Tons of choices. Get the kids out there and let them just BE.

I think that we as a nation are suffering mentally and emotionally due to our general disconnection with the natural world. We all need to unplug and get out there.

We are fortunate to live in a rural area where kids can enjoy snow, woods, etc. Last year we hosted some visitors with young children. The kids exploded out of the jeeps and just wanted to run around in the field. They didn't want to get back in the jeep but they didn't know the fun was just beginning. Into the woods they went, found salamanders and did more running around. They came back again this year. It was too dry for salamanders but they search for other critters, climbed up rocks, explored the woods and didn't stop for a minute while the adults took their time. November moon is right, there are tons of places and probably a lot nearby. When DS was young he surprised a moose behind our house. That week the kids had to do a science project for school. Other kids did models of the solar system. DS and his next door best friend went out and made plaster casts of the moose tracks.
