Alone in Vegas
I am going to Vegas for a convention over Labor Day weekend. What is a 47 year old woman to do with herself in the evening? I won't have enough money for shows and I don't really gamble. I do enjoy people watching.

1. You can spend alot of time walking around and looking at scenery. Stroll along the strip to see the outdoor free shows -- fountains of Bellagio, the silly pirate battle, the Venetian boaters -- enjoy the evening air and the amazing light shows.
2. Lots of cafe-type restaurants have excellent people watching facilities -- you can sit ``sidewalkside'', order a snack and a fancy drink, and watch the people come and go. In Paris: Mon Ami Gabi, Le Cafe; and others you will come across.
3. Take a walk in the wildlife habitat in the back yard at the Flamingo. (free)
4. Lots of window-shopping opportunities, if you like that sort of thing.
5. Even if you don't gamble, you might want to join the ``frequent gambler program'' at your hotel. Just signing up can get you free tickets to shows and discounts on meals. I admit the free shows are kinda lame (like comedy clubs), but it is something cheap to do.

You can enjoy the fountains while enjoying lunch @ Mon Ami Gabi @ Paris. The Forum Shops are a nice place to hang out as well, or your hotel pool. Check out cheapovegas.com. I also like to visit the M & M store (on the Strip) or just wander through any of the Hotels. For a glass of wine, try the joint (the name escapes me) in the little connector Mall area off of Mandalay Bay.

I've gone to Vegas on a weekend by myself. I'm single and female. I had a good time. I don't gamble either, but played some penny slots & joined the 'players' programs, I did a lot of what capxxx recommended actually. I went in June and it was HOT. But I had an umbrella and walked everywhere. Nites were pretty steamy too.

i went to vegas on a convention and ended up alone the first evening b.c all my colleagues planes were delayed. I went to emeril lagasse's place and had dinner at the bar by myself. met plenty of ppl. This was yrs ago when emeril was IT, so if i were to go now, i'd probably research all the places I'd like to dine and eat at the bar (with a good book and a smile). have fun!

For another outdoor, people watching restaurant, try Cafe Ba Ba Reeba, in the Fashion Show Mall. They serve reasonably priced tapas/small plates. I would be comfortable dining there, or even just having a drink, solo.

You are catercorner from Fashion Show Mall. Fashion Show have daily runway shows. You can pick up the schedule from internet or newspaper.
You are also across the street from Wynn. The first lounge as you enter the casino is a great perch for people watching.
The art gallery at Wynn is a modest entry fee. Worth a gander.

If you're walking past Margaritaville, stop in and get a margarita and stand on the balcony overlooking the sidewalk; great place to people watch! That's what I'll be doing in 3 weeks when I'm there for just overnight before an early morning flight.
I second the suggestion to walk through the Flamingo's gardens and look at the fish and fowl. Good gelato in the area just inside.
