Allentown, PA

We will be in Allentown on May 3 and will have that afternoon and evening free. Any suggestions? There will be three adults.

Are you looking for a place to eat or something to do?

I am looking for both. We are only interested in very casual dining. Thanks!

We're orginally from Allentown and for casual dining, you can't beat The Brass Rail. There are two locations, one downtown on Hamilton Street and the other is on Lehigh Street. We prefer the Lehigh Street Location. For something to do, a walk thru the Fish Hatchery is a nice way to spend an afternoon. Its in a beautiful park location. There's a little museum and store there too. Its close to the Lehigh Street Brass Rail.

If you have a car I'd suggest Crystal Cave in Kunztown, PA which is 20-30 miles from Allentown. There are tours and a gift shop on the property. As I remember it, a fun tour of the cave.

Crystal Cave is in Kutztown.

I don't know if this will interest you or not, but the Alentown Art Museum http://www.allentownartmuseum.org will be opening the Designer Showhouse and Gardens May 1. The house is called West Park Place, it's a 1907 Victorian at 1509 Linden Street, Allentown. More than 25 designers and landscapers participated in making West Park Place showplace of contemporary design ideas. You can buy tickets at the door or in advance. Here is a website for the house: http://www.sotashowhouse.org

The Brass Rail has everything from steaks and seafood to cheesesteaks! Its not fancy. But the food is good and plentiful! We personally like the cheesesteaks!

By the way, I believe only the Lehigh Street site for the Brass Rail is still in operation; the Hamilton Street Brass Rail closed down a few years ago.
