Algonquin Hotel - Any remarks?

I am planning a trip to NYC and am planning on staying at the Algonquin Hotel? Anyone know anything about it? Also, any good restaurants in that area to recommend?

Great bar/lounge in the lobby!! Never stayed there, but I've had drinks there.

Our room, some years ago, was small and in need of redecoration. The area is loaded with restaurants and it it near theaters, shopping, etc.

They still have the cat. The hotel is historic and charming. The lobby lounge and the bar and the Oak Room are terrific. The food is not bad. The service is outstanding. The rooms are smallish, bathrooms updated but small and old fashioned. The block it's on (called Club Row) has about 5 other hotels on it including the Sofitel, City Club, Royalton, Mansfield, Iroquois. The NY Yacht Club and the Harvard Club are also there (I think).

DB Bistro Moderne (City Club), Triomphe (Sofitel) are considered very good. Utsav is an Indian rest. a block or 2 away that has a nice lunch buffet for about $14 (dinner, imo is overpriced there). There are lots of other dining options. Look on menupages.com -pick west 40's and have read.
