Airline Rules Minors

I will be flying in US with our 13 year old grandson this summer.

Do I need an specific type of documentation?

Technically no. You can check your airline's website, but it should say that children 14 and under do not require any specific identification document when traveling with an adult.

Having said that, it's highly recommended he has SOME SORT of ID, at least to prove his age.

It would be VERY prudent to have documentation from the parents allowing you to authorize medical treatments. Hopefully it won't be needed - but when it is it is important to have.

to clarify - that wouldn't be for the airlines - but just for your peace of mind during the trip . . . . .

Travelers under age 18 do not need ID - when we have traveled with our dtr they just ask her how old she is. Permission from parents to travel with him might be useful if anyone asks - but I have never heard of them requring that for domestic travel.

Although it might not be required to have I.D. and/or permission, it would also be prudent to have written travel permission from his parents, particularly if you do not have the same last name.
