Airfare from California - when to buy?

Hi everyone,

We're thinking about a return trip to Hawaii the last week of August '08. I notice the airfare from Aloha Airlines (San Diego to Maui) is currently $133 each way.

Now, I'm sure it's not going to get any lower than that... but should I expect it will hover around this same price for awhile? I usually see CA to HI airfare sales at good prices periodically throughout the year, but I'm not sure if I should wait or purchase now. We really aren't ready to solidify vacation plans yet so I'd prefer to wait until Spring to purchase tickets, but only if I can expect to see similar prices.

I know here_today_gone2Maui should know a lot about airfare prices from CA... maybe you, or any other Californians, could give me a recommendation?

Many thanks!

Carole

That is a great fare, but it probably is only valid until about mid-December. I seriously doubt that fare will be applicable to flights in the spring. Right now is the lowest airfare season to/fro Hawaii. The fares will progressively increase through the winter months. You are pretty much guaranteed that spring will be higher. Aloha has usually run mid-week specials from SD or Orange County for $199 each way, so that is probably the lowest fare you could expect in the Spring.

Actually Ag3048 they can book that fare right now which is $300 RT counting taxes. I really can't imagine that it will be any lower than that and I wouldn't count on getting that fare as the time gets closer. I know I paid almost twice that much going from SD to Maui this June.

If you can get that fare for flights in August 2008, you should definetely book it now.

Thanks... I figured that was the answer I'd get (buy now). Guess I better "firm up" the plans (decide for sure if we're going) NOW.

And yes, it's roughly $300 per ticket RT after taxes ($1200 for our family of 4).

Well, of course, as soon as I posted here the airfare went up... but we've changed our plans anyway and decided to also go to Oahu to visit my nephew.

So... now I can get SAN to HNL for $202 (one-way on Hawaiian) and OGG to SAN for the return for $143 (one-way on Aloha). So that's $345 + taxes total. We'll buy the interisland tickets from HNL to OGG later.

Given the new info.... what do you think... should we purchase now or wait?

We're not going until mid to late August 2008.

Thanks for your help.

When we traveled to Maui in August 2007, we paid about $600/person- LAX - OGG. I used farecast.com to help guess if the fare was ok or not. Sounds like you have good prices available to you right now.

Thanks!!

Going to Kauai in February. Airfares are running $600+ right now. What do you think? Buy now or wait until after the holidays? Historically, do fares go down toward the first of the year?

I just checked Hawaiian Airlines and except for Saturday flights in Feb, it was $159 ea way plus taxes. Sat was $197. That was to Oahu and then your RT to Kauai would be $78 plus taxes.
