Advice needed on Carmel lodging...
We are considering staying at the Highlands Inn or the Carmel Bay View Inn over the 4th of July, know Highlands is pricier, but what do you think is a fair rate for both of these options and what can you tell us about them. Also which has a better location considering we're staying over the holiday and assume it will be very busy. Thanks.

Well, it depends on whether you want to be in the thick of things (at the Bay View Inn) or more isolated at the Highlands Inn (on way to Big Sur) Be aware that only some of the rooms at the Bay View have ocean views. I think both will probably require a minimum of 2 nights over the holiday. Carmel is an expensive town to stay in. Sorry I can't tell you exact room rates, but I would guess Highlands Inn to be double that of Carmel Bay View. Bay View is located on Junipero Street, which is one of the busier streets that cross Ocean, the main road down to the beach. Hope that helps a bit. Quite honestly I don't think the 4th of July would be a choice weekend for Carmel, but it should be better there than in Monterey!

In their own way these are both wonderful properties. The Highlands Inn will offer you more of a hotel feel since it has its own restaurant, lobby, etc. The one drawback at the H.I. though (especially on holiday weekends) is going to be the drive in to Carmel. It may be a short distance but it can take a looonnng time when the traffic is bad--aand the traffic is bad that time of year.
The Carmel Bay View Inn might be a better choice if you're planning to spend a lot of time in Carmel. The rooms are good sized, have fire places and, as Kam pointed out, some have balconies with ocean views (you could see Point Lobos from our room). They also have HUGE comfortable beds that rival the best I have slept in. They don't have a restaurant, however, you'll be within walking distance of dozens (they do have a complimetary continental breakfast).
Again, I love both of these properties but on a busy weekend like that one I would probably opt the the one in town: The Bay View Inn.
