Steffar: forgot to add, My son and DIL vacationed in Malta last summer and had a great time, but their best memory was the warmth and hospitality of the people of Malta.

JFK is more convenient than EWR in terms of using trains. That's because using the JFK AirTrain, you can connect to the "A" or "E" subways, in additional to the LIRR. So, if your hotel is on the "A" or "E" line, it can mean just 2-rides.

From EWR, AirTrain takes you to the Newark Airport train station, where you connect to AMTRAK (makes no sense for NYC because of high cost) or NJTransit. NJTransit only goes to NY Penn Station in Manhattan. You need to connect to subway there. Or you take the NJTransit to Newark and then connect to PATH for lower Manhattan. But most likely it's 3-ride to your hotel, not 2.

From JFK to the Warwick, AirTrain to the "E" train will work. And it's cheaper than from EWR.

As for the OP. With two people, I'd just use a car service.

BSpiel-

I think of public transportation as the bus, subway, and something like Airtrain. I think of cabs and limos as private.

Are commercial airlines public transportation? Are first and business class private and cattle car public?

Adu, I agree, but I don't think I ever considered airlines as "public transportation," unless, of course, you consider the old People Express.

stefarr,
I live in Manhattan, and have often flown into EWR in the past. I think your instinct to take a shuttle minivan is the right one.

The service I have used, both from EWR to NYC and from JFK to NYC (when arriving late at night. If arriving earlier-I use the AirTrain).

My friends and I normally use the Blue Super Shuttle- Here is the link-

http://tinyurl.com/c7z5ym

The fare is $21 for the first passenger and drops down for the second I believe.

The Brooklyn Museum is not really hard to do, and well worth the trip but getting there will take a little while.
As you can see in this link, the Number 2 train lets you out at the Eastern Parkway Stat, just adjacent to the Museum.

If you want a spectacular outdoors experience (and picnic option) combined with the Brooklyn Museum visit, I highly recommend the Hanami, which is the annual celebration of Spring and viewing of the Cherry Blossoms at the adjacent Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and will be just starting when you visit. Here you can find info and some galleries of photos:

I agree with the recommendations for Nougatine- but have only had lunch there, never dinner.

I recommend booking a car service from Newark airport. The shared van services are TERRIBLE (bad drivers, bad vehicles, long waits) and take forever
dial7.com
will ask you to phone them when you've got your luggage and they will tell you where to meet the driver. It will be cheaper than taking a taxi and likely a better car and driver. The total will be ~ $65 with tolls and tip. If you want to use public transportation, you'd take the Express Olympia bus to Port Authority bus terminal for $15/person (NOT Grand Central) and a taxi from there for ~ $6 so total $36.

Stores for your teens... H & M is popular for inexpensive trendy things. They have several locations, one being at Rockefeller Center. (don't miss going to Top of the Rock-the observation deck at Rockefeller Center). For jeans, they might like Levi's and there's a Levi's store on Lexington Ave. across from Bloomingdales. Also at both Macy's and Bloomingdales, if you register at customer service first you'll get an 11% off discount card. There are chain stores like Club Monaco and French Connection with multiple locations that also sell good things for teens.

You should buy your tickets for the Statue & Ellis Island NOW online and book a monument pass so you can go inside. statuecruises.com If you wait til you get here, you'll have to stand on line to buy the tix and there may not be monument passes. If you're early morning people, the first ferry of the day is usually the shortest wait. You'll need to take the subway to get downtown to the ferry. hopstop.com is a useful website for directions. For mapping things and to see how far a walk something is, use maps.google.com

Your hotel is not far from Central Park--it's an easy 10 minute walk. They offer free walking tours daily. http://www.centralparknyc.org/site/P...s_walkingtours

Hope you have a great trip and come back with a trip report.

Just keep in mind that, with a 6:30 p.m. arrival, by the time you pass customs and immigration, you'll be leaving for NYC at about 7:30 to 8:00. Traffic into the City through the Holland or Lincoln Tunnels (the likely route for a van, bus, or limo) at that hour can be nightmarish. The AirTrain/NJTransit connection makes traffic a non-issue.

This weather is normal here for the time of year. We're just beginning spring - trees don;t have leaves yet and only a few flowers are out. Malta has a MUCH hotter climate than NYC.

But - just carry on as if the rain wasn't happening - the city is great any way.

I'm told the stock they carry at H & M here is different from that in Europe. Hope you have a smooth and safe trip.

Hi stefarr,
I know you're going to enjoy your visit very much.
I still feel you should consider taking the shuttle van, because when I arrive in New York after a long flight from Europe I am wiped out and the last thing I want to do to have to switch from train to subway to taxi to get to my hotel. Even if the traffic is heavy, the fact that you are dropped off at the door of your destination makes that worth it, IMO!

SO glad you'll try to get to the Brooklym Mus plus Hanami- If you do, I hope you love the color pink because you will be completely surround by it at the Hanami!

For opera tickets, you might try stubhub.com. The tickets there are guaranteed and they have a 1-800 live help line. If you found tickets there that work for you (I saw $94 balcony tickets, 2 together), they could be sent to your hotel or possibly left at will call. We used this service for sporting event tickets in Michigan and it worked out well.

If you reading this while in New York, I recommend Artisanal, which you mentioned in your first post, especially if you love cheese. Put yourselves in the waiter's hands and he or she will discuss with you the type of cheese you like and your options. Their other (non cheese) food is very good as well.

A good restaurant near your hotel is Bar Americain on 52nd street. Also, you may have realized there is an acclaimed restaurant in MOMA, called The Modern.

Hi everyone

I cannot believe i m not in NYC anymore....we loved every second of it...the city is one pulsating beat, dragging you in and nowhere in the world have I felt so alive ( and so poor!!!)

Well to start off, the dial 7 cab picked us up in 5 minutes!! Immigration was hell though..officers there can be a teeny bit nicer i think!!!

Warwick Hotel comes highly recommended..excellent service, clean largish rooms and a location to boot..5 stars

Our most enjoyable experience was eating out ...lol..we are foodie buffs yes...Nougatine was beyond real...Artisanal exquisite and La Grenouille the dame...try out Fig and Olive its loud but their combinations work well, also at at BXL very nice beer and mussel plates...so few days so many restaurants.

Sights...well here we did not see as much as we expected for two reasons..the weather ..we had the four seasons in 6 days..with snow on wednesday..I think..then heavy rain all saturday morning clearing for a chilly but lovely easter sunday morning...and the frikkin tourists..heheeh..they descended in their thousands from thursday till Sunday..blocking subways, avenues and making getting into Abercrombie and Fitch a hellish nightmare..and any museum or site the queues were four or fivr blocks long..no exaggerations here....I tried to get tickets for opera and broadway..everything was sold out!!!How do you live with them running all over your city??? lol joking of course

Staten island I liked, ellis was great... Battery Park is my fav. park I think..Washington Square getting a makeover..greenwich my fave part of the city, together with Nolita and Soho...Murray Hill too. Central Park was lovely after Nougatine...wow those houses on the Park....I did take a lottery ticket..didnt win though..
Visited my 84 yr old uncle in Long Island..enjoyed the train trip and seeing him..he so loves the City. My cuz works there..it was so emotional seeing them after 20 years..felt proud that he made it there..working hard true, but still Maltese deep down!

MoMA had a miss Im afraid....the queues were not for the faint hearted

The Egyptian musuem is a find so is Brooklyn..very hip I must say

Ground zero ..a reminder of our fragility and senslessness of violence, however I also felt the courage and determination of an unbent spirit to move forward, despite every woe..

One thing I m proud of is how I mastered the subway..heheh latte in hand..I was even approached for instructions....my husband looking dazed and following me close by..he had no idea what I was doing poor guy!!

We used the cabs too..efficient as I had imagined..I so loved to flag one down!!

Well we aided the American economy as well - as you can imagine!!Century 21, Macy, levi, diesel, apple, they all had a share of our bucks!!!!The kids are over the moon trying everything on at once!!

and so here I am .....back home once again with suitcases of dirty laundry and metro cards and receipts and tons of fotos and videos .no greeners left however and I stll have to check my credit card....

What I have left are the memories and the experience of having lived New York for 6 days, of having been drawn into its pulse, its unforgiving pace, meeting its smart, aloof people and that..as they say in the commercial..is indeed priceless.

Thanks for all your help , you all made a difference to my trip..we l be back..thats for sure

in Valletta before moving on to Gozo...a lovely stay in
