Does anyone have suggestions for good restaurnats in Waikiki? We'll probably be staying at either HHV or Marriott Resort & Spa. Probably won't have a rental car so we'll either have to walk or use public transport. We're pretty much simple folk when it comes to food, nothing super fancy. Any suggestions, experiences or advice would be appreciated!

Puka Dog at 2301 Kuhio has good hot dogs. Very casual, mostly take-out, but I think they may have a few tables. www.pukadog.com

I also like Bogart's for breakfast/brunch/lunch--3045 Monsarrat. Very casual, and good food. It's within walking distance from the Marriott (but not right there--you do have a walk a little). Next door to Bogart's is a health food and smoothie bar with delicious acai bowls.

Duke's is fun, especially an outside table, where you can enjoy a meal/drink and watch the beach activities.

The Paradiso not bad and some nice selections in the food court. For lunch and a nice view there is Top of Waikiki it make a full rotation in an hour.
If you walk over to Kuhio and go a few blocks toward Diamond Head you'll find the Bluewater shrimp truck and a few blocks further is St Germaines bakery.

Lots of places in Waikiki for a fair priced meal, but everyone needs to go to Dukes first. Make a reservation for sure a week in advance

Do your homework carefully. Duke's is a very popular and very busy restaurant, BUT, we were recently in Hawaii and ate dinner out every night for over three weeks. We visited every type of place - sad to say, Duke's was the worst of the lot.

I agree with GBC. The level of activity and atmosphere at Duke's can be fun, and for that reason, it might be worth going to, but the food is mediocre at best.

Had dinner at Duke's a couple of years ago and it was fine. Not spectacular but certainly not "the worst" or "mediocre." Perhaps things have changed since we were there. If that is the case, then go for a drink with appetizers during the day. More beach activity then anyway. Watch the newbies trying to surf and all the other water activity. Duke's to me isn't all about food.

Duke's is a great place to sit, have a drink, people watch, look at the view, etc. I've never eaten at the restaurant -- we just go to the bar, order a drink and bar food. Definitely a "happening" place.

Duke's - average food, but fun place to go.
CJ's Deli - only place at HHV where you get your money's worth.
Hale Koa military hotel - you need a military ID to you the restaurants, but any one can use the beach bar and it has the best prices on Waikiki Beach. The sandwiches on the bar menu are good.
Wailana Coffee Shop - best breakfast in Waikiki.
Shorebird at the Outrigger Reef - decent prices for a beachside restuarant

If you decide to rent a car, I would also recommend:
Asia Manoa (Manoa)
Uncle's Fishmarket (near the commercial fishing docks)
La Mariana Sailing Club (Sand Island)
Kalbee (Aiea)

There's a huge food court at the Ala Moana Mall--loads of fast-food choices....

Here's my favorite "hidden gem". It's a shrimp truck (like you see at the beaches) but parked on Kuhio between Launiu and Kaiolu. They have fantastic food, most "plates" in the $10-12 range. Garlic shrimp, cole slaw, corn, rice, garlic bread (for example). You can get it to-go, or eat on picnic tables in the parking lot! The name of it is "Blue Water Shrimp p& Seafood co." phone 227-3846, open 10-10. This is not too far from HHV and you could take the food down to the Fort de Russey picnic area. Doesn't get better than that!

I also agree Ala Moana food court in the lower level is very good. I liked "Lahaina Chicken" there. Generous portions, great food. Easy to get there on The Bus. If you just grab food to-go, you can get back using the same transfer (so you only pay one time for the round-trip).

You'll find great sandwiches at Kua 'Aina. There are two locations - Ward Village Shops downtown and the original one in Haleiwa. A great place for breakfast is Eggs 'N' Things in Honolulu. http://www.eggsnthings.com/

I love Eggs 'N' Things, but didn't suggest it because the OP said they wouldn't have a car. Of course maybe there's a way to get there easily without one. We always have a car so I'm not familiar with bus routes, etc. But if you make it there minimom be sure to check out the servers' aprons. They're quite unique and they have them for sale.

Also love going to Sam Choy, but again it's a bit of a drive from where we stay on Lewers, just below Kuhio.

We enjoy Eggs 'n Things too and it moved to Saratoga, not too far from HHV.
