I find Maui the most boring place on earth. Apart from Haleakala (which is often fogged in), there is nothing to do see or to do. Stuff like the Hana Road and the Needle are desperation sites that would even get a footnote in any place that was halfway interesting.
Maui is simply for people whose idea of a good time is lying on the beach in the sun and getting slightly buzzed on watered down drinks, which is all you get unless you buy your own liquor at an ABC store. If this is not your idea of a good time, it's a colossal drag.

I personally don't go to Maui or anyplace in Hawaii for that matter because I'm looking for things to see or do. I go to enjoy a relaxing vacation in a tropical atmosphere with great weather and beautiful hotels and beaches. If I want to see or do [anything] you'll find me in Southeast Asia, or Europe....

Here are some other recommendations near your hotel. The Sheraton is in a great area - right at the end of Kannapali beach.
I would rent snorkel gear at Snorekel Bob's or Boss Frog's (there is one near your hotel). This way you have it when you want it. You can snorkel at Black Rock right off the beach.
For a Luau - if you want to have a casual and inexpensive dinner but see the show - try this - on Front Street in Lahina there is a restaurant called Betty's Beach Café. They overlook the Feast at Lele - which is the upscale luau in the area. You can pay for burgers & beer and watch the show. You can call Betty's and ask for a table near he window (to see the show).
We really like the town of Paia. It is on the way to Hana and has a few great restaurants - best is Paia Fish market.
In terms of things to do - someone said it best - Maui is about being in Maui and not rushing around. Get your snorkel gear and go to a beach, so a little snorkeling. Put some drinks in the cooler and watch the sunset.
