4 days in Chicago - late September

We will be in Chicago for 4 days in late September and are looking for some ideas on things to do - 5 people total (2 in their late 20s, 2 in their early 50s, and a 14 year old boy). The women would like to see an Oprah show (we know the 14 year old can't go) - does anyone know when the phone lines will open for this season? Other than that, we are just looking for some good "touristy" suggestions as well as some off-the-beaten-track ideas. Thanks in advance!

What made you decide to go to Chicago if you don't know what you want to see or do other than Oprah? I've always wondered why people select destinations and then look for things to do.

Anyway, there is shopping along Michigan Ave., boat cruises, Lincoln Park Zoo, Brookfield Zoo, Navy Pier, Architectural tours, theatre, Tommy Gun Tours of the Ganster world, Catigny, Sears Tower, Museum of Science and Industry, Art Museum, Goodman Theatre, Second City, Field Museum etc.

Basically you name it and it is probably there. You just need to do some research.

Regarding Oprah, I checked and all it said was that the phone lines opened in August. I would assume they are open now. Tapings start in September.

Do a Chicago search on this site. There is a lot of good info that has already been posted.

The boy will love ESPN Sports Zone. Also go to the Field Museum and see Sue, the world's largest T-Rex, and other interesting exhibits. Ride the El. Eat Chicago-style deep dish pizza. You'll have a great time.

Where are you staying? What do you like to do? There is a lot to do in Chicago.

Just Curious - We have done a lot of research and have ideas already on things we want to do. Plus Southwest currently has $34 fares each way. We mentioned Oprah because that is a definite, but we have called the reservation line for the past 2 weeks and it still says it is closed. We were just looking for things we may have overlooked or were not aware of... or if something is suggested by several different people, that probably means it is a pretty good bet.
Thanks.

I've tried 3 times unsuccessfullt to see Oprah. It's tough. However, I read here that one person staying at a fancy hotel tipped the manager generously and he helped her get tickets. I guess it's worth a try to try that route.
Your 14 yr old will love the Planetarium. Take the boat taxi from Navy Pier, it's fun.

You could go to Evanston via public transportation or car and hit a Northwestern football game. Evanston is gorgeous and after the game there is plenty of shopping and restaurants nearby.

I'm sure your 14-year old would also enjoy the Shedd Aquarium.
