Hi Jen. Re; your trips "this next year'--if it's any time soon, of course, check on fire situation, as our state and many brave firefighters battle the heat and blazes.
Funny about the direction of your move. I meet more and more Californians who are moving from here ( in the Bay Area) to Texas!
Per son and dtr in law, who went for a weekend "parent alone time" escape, I second Kim's rec for Tickle Pink Inn--along with an oceanside dinner at the restaurant at next-door Highlands Inn. i too have not heard the latter is run down.
I also love the area around Asilomar. Even if you dont stay there, try to make itfor a sunset walk on the dunes there, along the wooden deck sidewalks.

Jen, you could wander around with a map and printouts from websites and Fodors, but it would probably be more productive to consult with a real estate person in each area. Just be honest about your timeline.
P.S., no one (even a realtor) knows what prices will be like in 5 years.

One house one street over just sold for $5 million- 8,000 sq.ft.
Jen, it isn't the price, it's the size! An 8,000 sf house in the areas you are talking about would probably be $15 or $20 million. $2 million might get you 1,000 sf on the ocean. We recently saw a 2-BR cottage in Redondo Beach that was 3 blocks from the ocean, and was for sale for about a million, just to give you a reference point. When I say "cottage", I mean "small" (but cute).

I just went for a walk in Del Mar this weekend and saw a gorgeous new home about 3000 sq ft with an adjacent smaller home about 2000 sq feet on the cliffs looking over the ocean, brand new for 11 million. A smaller fixer upper near the ocean is probably 1.5 million. I live 2 miles to the beach and the place next door is for sale for 1.6 million, land only, about 1 acre. There are some nice homes east of here that are upscale tracts for about 500-800K plus. Some come with Mello Roos fees so you have to watch out for that. You can check out Del Sur which is one of those communities online. Another area is Torrey Highlands. You get a lot for your money there. I hear that Escondido real estate values really plummeted, like 40%, so there may be some real values to find there. Personally, I would prefer getting something smaller and coastal for about 1.5 million (yea, spend more and get less but you're where it is cool and close to all the great things). I live near Rancho Santa Fe and I think it starts at about 2 million and I am amazed at how many rich people there are. I have to think they made their fortunes elsewhere and retired here.
If you come here for the 4 day, I would recommend staying at the 4 seasons Aviara or the Grand Del Mar, or the Estancia in La Jolla or the Lodge at Torrey Pines. All are very nice and close to all the areas you would want to be exploring.

Hello all,
Gosh, many thanks for the lovely responses, and very helpful. I do realize we would need a realtor but do not want to look that seriously yet. I had thought I might instead look online some first if I had some ideas of names of areas. By no means do I want or need a huge house any longer, but would love a great location!
We want to visit there and do normal vacation things, great restaurants, etc. and also ride around a bit to just "check it out"....I have a great lakehouse with a view that is utterly incredible in Austin, Texas, but still have always wanted to live back in California where I went to high school! I do realize it is expensive.....darn!!
So appreciate the help....keep it coming....any restaurant recommendations for the San Diego area?
Jennifer
