There is an express highway (toll-road) between Rome and Florence. It is generally smooth traveling at fast speeds. If you are comfortable on a motorcycle at high speeds (cars will be doing about 85 mph), a motorcycle will be a pleasant way to travel.
You do not need an international license for Italy unless it is required by your motorcycle rental company. We rented cars in France and only needed an INTL LIC to drive through Austria. The reason for an international license is that it allows a police officer who doesn't read English to translate your license.
We attended an audience with the Pope by simply showing up early one morning and being in St. Peters when the audience occured.
I traveled with my husband and a friend but found I was the object of attention when I was alone in Italy. I am a tall redhead but look all of the 50 years I am.....don't quite understand but at times I felt uncomfortable when I was on my own.
