Machu Picchu in January

Hi there, I will be in Peru in January before I head over to Rio for Carnaval and I want to do Machu Picchu while I am there and want to know what people's experiences have been at that time.

Is there a specific trail that is better at this time of the year? Or with the unpredictable weather - would it be better to do the train?

I will be backpacking on a budget so if anyone could recommend options that would be great.

Thanks

We were there in January 2012. It hardly rained at all. Though I suppose that is rather anecdotal.

I would bring along a good rain cover for my backpack.

I was there in a January and had little rain. The next year the tracks washed away and they airlifted tourists out of Aguas Calientes.

Being an El Nino is in the offing (90%) I would be reluctant to book nonrefundable Inka Trail permits and might go with the train.

Thanks for the advice! The train at that time of year seems to be the best consensus from everyone I have spoken to.
