Condu: I have to wonder what makes you think "we have decided on a restaurant", as the post above yours mentions TEN possible places...
MsLizzy: out of your list, I have only been to "La Cabrera", which I consider decent, but one of the most touristy restaurants in BA, with often more English than Spanish spoken. May I have the URL for that list, as I was unable to find it on Chowhound?
Sunday the 17th through Wednesday the 20th are OK with me, but "La Despensa" isn't open Sunday evenings. Anyway, I would prefer Monday the 18th.

avrooster, I am sorry I missed the last part of your Dec 20, 09, 7:55am Post: "I'm open to any other suggestions."
BTW, I am open to other suggestions, as well.
But, as I said in the past: It would be fun to go somewhere off the beaten tourist path. Quintessentially Porteño."
Since , we have have a local expert as part of the party, I for one, would like to accept his recommendations.

Maybe I wasn't clear in my last post, and I am all for avrooster's suggestion of La Despenca in Barracas. I am totally an 'off the beaten track' kinda girl. I like to be adventurous and eat good quality food wherever that may be.
The list was simply from a chowhound' post. We will be there for a month and trying out all sorts of places. I don't particularly want to get stuck in tourist traps so I appreciate your inside track, avrooster.
The 18th is fine for me.

Great! Let's see who else can join us on Monday the 18th of January, at, say 8.30 PM, in "La Despensa", Isabel la Católica 310, located in the "barrio" de Barracas, in the Southern part of BA.
If any of you wish to visit "Caminito" in "la Boca", which is an extremely touristy spot I don't usually recommend, you could do so before coming to this dinner, as it is in the same general area.

Well, "La Despensa" is closed for their holidays on Jan. 18, so we have to start discussing another restaurant for our GTG.
Sottovoce http://www.sottovoceristorante.com.ar/en/sottovoce.php comes to mind right away. I would describe it as "upscale Italian".
It is somewhat touristy, but many locals go too, for instance yours truly. http://www.guiaoleo.com.ar/detail.php?ID=1253
There is one in Recoleta and another one in Puerto Madero. If it is in very warm, as it could well be, they have open air tables in the branch near the river, which would be nice.
Years ago, we had a great TA posters GTG in the Recoleta branch, but that was before TA banned me for "telling it like it is". LOL!!!
Any other ideas?

Looked up various reviews on Sottovoce. Many were positive, a few were negative. Also, looked at their menu on their website.
Lots of variety. The food sounds good. But, the restaurant is not exactly off the beaten path.
An open air dinner near the river in Puerto Madero sounds lovely. I guess that I will have to wear my L'Eau d'Deet!!!!

I said it was "somewhat touristy". I'll try to think of more "Quintessentially Porteño" alternatives.
I'll tell you my version (there are other versions, of course) of "banned by TA", during our riverside dinner.

We've eaten at Sottovoce (Recoleta) and enjoyed it. We had to wait for our table and were given our choice of a Bellini or champagne while we waited. A nice touch we thought. We can walk there from our hotel. I didn't know there was another restaurant in Puerto Madero.
Incidentally, what time are you talking about for dinner? We usually ate at 9:30-10:00 as the locals do. Monday the 18th is fine for us and whatever restaurant is agreed on is also fine for us.

AVrooster:
Sottovoce in Puerto Madero sounds lovely to me as in said in my previous post.
As, we will have only been in BA for less than 2 full days by Jan 18th, anywhere we eat will seem "Quintessentially Porteño."
Personally, I like the the 8:30PM reservation time that was mentioned in an earlier post by avrooster. That way we can be seated & having some wine by 9:30PM.

Wish we could join you but sadly we will be leaving on the 9th of January. I just ate at Sottovoce in Puerto Madero on Sunday afternoon. Definitely not off the beaten path- but it was nice- upscale Italian- a mix of tourists and locals. Great bread basket and view.
We tried to go on Saturday night at about 7:30 but they were closed. We left at about 8:30 and they still weren't open yet- so you may want to check on that.

I was also hoping to find an off the beaten track restaurant with good local food. We can do this on our own though so I'm for whatever happens. I'm sure we don't have to commit to a restaurant right now so let's give a little more research and put this one down as an option.
BTW what does it mean when they say it is a 'closed' restaurant?

Can I just throw in some new names?
SottoVoce can be expensive . and while it has a nice mix of locals and a few tourists, the one in Recoleta tends to be a lot of "regulars" and businessmen..
Anything on Puerto Madero in my opinion is extremely touristy and usually more expensive.
In San Telmo, Amici Meie on Defensa .. Italian, overlooking Dorrego Square and excellent food, great venue for a bunch of people..
There are a gazillion great places in Palermo Viejo.. and Soho and Hollywood as well.
The thing about "touristy" vs locals... we all eat in the same restaurants!
I don't ever eat in places that are named Kansas or Hard Rock but aside from that , most locals (here in town) eat in the same restaurants that tourists go to.
La Cabrera has gotten touristy thanks to people like us who talk about it on forums.. I have been there when there was no English being spoken at all, and other times, especially weekends, English is all you hear. .
near La Cabrera is Don Julio, some people prefer this place to Cabrera.
San Telmo- La Brigada.
Off the beaten path could end up being work for people getting there, what path? Do you want to go to Belgrano? farther ? What about a place called Juana M on Carlos Pellegrini, across from La Recova ? a vast room lit only with white candles at night, casual, fun , excellent service and attention and a fabulous salad bar... Parrillas have salad bars because often people order steak and maybe a potato , so you can keep going to the salad bar .. Juana M has the best salad bar in town.
How about a place called Los Cantinas de mi Amigos..
This is down to earth, not touristy at all, good service and authentic cooking. My favorite dish would be the garlicky calamari..
I happen to love Cluny in Palermo Viejo. I like the salads at lunch, I like just stopping and taking a break from shopping and have a drink and maybe a snack .. the space is lovely and very comfortable with excellent service.
In Las Canitas there are dozens of restaurants.. my favorite is Novocento.
Again, good service, very good food and the other best Bloody Mary in town. ( so far)
I hope this helps you a little with your choices. Off the beaten track for me is going out of town lol ... for you, everything will be new and different ... All food is local food, even if you have Chinese, it is made my Argentinean Chinese :- )
"Closed doors" .. these are restaurants that are perfectly allowed but are within the owners own home.. www.saltshaker.net is one .. read the website.. you can see how they work things. I would recommend his ..

Scarlett,
Thanks for all the restaurant advice. I suppose it's the same here in Canada. We all go to the same restaurants here as well. If I have guests from another country here I might take them to a restaurant that served French Canadian cuisine or venison or perhaps take them out to the country to go to a pancake house to enjoy the maple syrup. But that is not the average restaurant cuisine offered.
I have rented an apartment at Arenales St. bet. Uriburu and Junin through Buenos Aires Habitat. I believe you suggested that organization to me in another thread. Thank you. I only hear how nice it is there.
Maybe we can touch base once I'm in BA. Where are you in recoleta? I will have a laptop with me so we can keep in touch if you like.

Scarlett: thank you for your restaurant recommendations. I will add them to my long-g-g list of choices to try while staying in BA.
MsLizzy:
In your posts above you mention both the 17th & 18th of January as a possible date. Could you please, clarify?
As for the task at hand of choosing a restaurant, the choices seem endless!!!!!
I am thrilled to say we have confirmed reservations at the "closed door" Casa Coupage for one of their wine tasting/food pairing evenings! My husband & I will be celebrating our 46th wedding anniversary.
