Cancun or Puerto Vallarta?

Planning a long weekend with my guy and looking to stay at a Starwood property (using points). I've never been to Mexico and we want an easy flight from Boston. We're thinking either the Westin Resort & Spa Cancun or the Westin Resort & Spa PV. Interested in lounging on the beach with afternoon cocktails and a nice dinner - with some romance thrown in of course. No need for any major nightlife, although always nice to have the option. And we'd be up for exploring if there are interesting things to see. We like high-end hotel rooms and fine dining. Any insight is appreciated! We're also considering Westin/St. John and Westin Lucaya/GBI if you have any input on those as well. Many thanks!!

From Boston, Cancun, would be closer. But I don't think I'd call the Westin Cancun luxurious by any stretch. I've only driven by it, but it didn't look very inviting; not really well kept up.
The PV Westin is probably nicer.

I have toured the Westin in PV, it is a very nice hotel. Doesn't feel very "Mexican", but it is beautiful and very contemporary. In a good location in the Marina. I have been to Cancun 2x, PV 10x or more. I love PV, it has much more character than Cancun. Excellent fine dining in PV include Daquiri Dicks, La Palapa, River Cafe, Barcelona Tapas, Le Bistro, Cafe de Artiste plus many others. Great cheap food also, but these are great fine dining options. Great websites for PV are:

www.allvallarta.com

www.vallartainfo.com

Have fun!

Altho Cancuns beaches are beautiful,Cancun has no Mexica flavor what so ever. You could be in Miami or Ft Lauderdale and not know the difference.Ive stayed at the PV Westin and it is very nice, even tho the beaches In Puerto Vallarta are not nearly as nice as Cancuns I like PV much better.Playa De Carman is an hour South of Cancun and is just beautiful, laid back and not Americanized as Cancun but Im not sure if there is a Westin Hotel there. You will have to ck.For beaches Playa de Carman. For Mexican Architecture, cobblestone streets and mountainside beauty PV.

I have only been to Puerto Vallarta (but I've been there 15 times). It is a charming, older, authentic Mexican town, which also does a large tourist business. PV is known for its many great restaurants, from fine dining to casual fare. PV is the longest flight of any destinations you've mentioned, but I highly recommend it for a 1st trip to Mexico.

On the flip-side Cancun was built by the government to attract tourist dollars. The water and beaches there are more beautiful but the place lacks soul (IMO).

have been going to P. Vallarta from Phila for the last 15yrs sometimes 2x a year it's too far to travel for a long wkd. You need at least a wk there unless you don't mind the long plane ride. Believe me you won't want to come back. Check out trip advisor.com and check the Westin in Cancun it will be much closer than P. Vallarta. Good Luck

Oops, I missed the "long weekend" part. Save Puerto Vallarta for when you have a week or two to enjoy it. Seems like one of your Caribbean choices would be a lot less stressful (expense and travel time) for a quickie getaway.
