Yucatan - Chicxulub

Hello all,
I would appreciate any feedback on this as I cannot find anything on the internet from actual people who visited this area.

We are planning on visiting Yucatan - Chicxulub during Christmas, their is a group of us and we were planning on renting a house. We've found that houses during this time are very cheap ($800+ per week for a 4 bedroom). This concerns me and was wondering what background anyone has on this area? Their will also be 2 kids (2yr and 3yr.

Were not too interested in the tourist thing, the pool, beach and some local stuff is good enough for us. Since we have kids we would like a pharmacy and a place for fresh milk nearby. I have visted Mexico several time but always "resort" area so this is very new to me.

Thanks for all your help and if anyone can direct me to websites please do. This is the webiste where we were looking at some houses. www.acrhomes.com.mx

I think you will find some of what you
are looking for. My wife and I just
bought a vacation home up the road.
This area has Canadians and Americans
as well as native Mexicans & others.
It is not anything like Cancun - so
no worries.
This is a family area laid back and
easy. The town of Progresso is close
by and has everything you need.
Heading towards Telchac Puerto it
becomes less populated and real mexico.
Plan on seeing the Mayan ruins thers are several with in a driving distance.
Merida the city should be on your plans
several nights during the week, you will find cutural events on the main
plaza. Web sites for you to see are
Yucatan today & Merida Insider.
The beach is empty and open so i think
you will have what you want.
I might be in San Benito where our house is - maybe we can find a way to
exchange e-mials and I'd be happy to invite you and all the family and friends over.
Enjoy !

We are renting a house nearby in Uaymitun in mid-December. We also found rents to be very reasonable. Our experience with Mexico has mostly been resorts. Since we haven't taken our trip yet, I am relying on the honesty of our property owner in answering questions for us. I've also been reading on TripAdvisor's Merida Forum.

While it may seem obvious, it was wisely pointed out that this area does not have the "glitz" of resort areas. No one will be waiting on us and cleaning up after us.

This area of Mexico faces the Gulf. It is not the clear blue water of the Caribbean. Pictures showing greenish-blue water were probably taken during the summer. Water in December tends to be more green/brown. While the water is clean and swimmable, it does not have clarity for snorkeling in December. "Nortes" may blow in bringing cooler and windy weather. This stirs up the water further reducing clarity.

What exactly is meant by "swimmable" and "cooler weather" is relative.

We're ok with the beach conditions as described above. However, I'm glad I learned it AHEAD of time and could make an informed decision. No doubt I'd have been disappointed had I been expecting the same conditions found along the Mayan Riviera.

Dear rtplush,
Renting a house along this coast for $800 a week is real. I own a house in Telchac Puerto and that what is goes for. In Chicxulub you will find houses to be less expensive. And I might add, the houses are nice. As mentioned in the other posting, where you see blue water in the pics, that is the summer time.
You will find pharmacies in Chicxulub. As mentioned, Telchac Puerto is further out and "more Mexican." You will have a hard time finding fresh milk. Mostly we drink long life milk that doesn't have to be fridgerated unitl after it has been opened.
You can also look at http://www.vacationrentals.com/vacat...s/Yucatan.html for beach rentals.
