Back to the original post, if I'm putting aside the cost and distance, I'd easily pick Hawaii over Mexico. And I really like Mexico. That said, I think six nights would be a bit tight for a trip to Hawaii given the distance and time zones. Also, you'll get more bang for your hotel buck in Mexico.

I would not go to either in January. But if it was a better time of year, it would be Hawaii. We spent just as much on our Mexican vacation this year as we spent on previous Hawaii vacations.

I can't imagine that you could keep to that budget in Hawaii. Check out an option of Mexico city to huatulco, which is southern mexico on pacific side. Coves with many beaches to explore, two authentic Mexican towns, great Oaxacan cuisine, and surprisingly super snorkeling/diving. There are frequent, 1 hour flights mexico city to Huatulco. Huatulco has some reasonable accomodations, too. Look it up on tripadvisor.
