walking shoes

Anyone have a shoe to recommend for around-town walking? Mexico in March. My Rockport walking shoes finally need to be replaced, after 7 years. Since the are now re-designed post-9/11, without the steel shank, I am open to suggestions. Something good for uneven surfaces and rounded cobblestones. Sneakers won't do for long days. Thanks!

I swear by my Keen Newport H2Os, and my husband his Tech Amphibians. We don't take anything else but flipflops for showers and beaches.

I love my Cole Hahn mary janes with Nike soles. They don't look like "trainers" but they feel great after all day walking.

ttt - thank you both, mcmfong- I will probably be looking for laces.

What about non-Amphibian shoes- anyone else have favorites?

You really need to look at the feedback on the www.tripadvisor.com san miguel de allende forum posts (recent).
We walk on hills and cobblestones day and night.

mikemo- I did look, thanks to your frequent refs, to that site & forums. I posted because I am just recovering from knee problems, which are new to me this year, and Iwanted some direct feedback. I encountered the rounded cobblestones (flanked by slippery slate borders!) in Brussels and Brugge, but now both pairs of my #1 reliable shoes need to be replaced.

Some of the sidewalks are uneven, and the portenos/as also like dogs/horses/beef... etc.... so look down sometimes as your walking and up at other times for the beautiful architecture...

Thanks for the feedback. I wanted to let you know what I ended up with & highly recommend - a last pair of Rockport prowalkers ($72), a pair of Clark Springers - a lightweight sueded closed toe sandle call that is like walking on clouds ($55) and a slip-on leather dress shoe by Trotters ($75) that I wore to work today soooo comfortable.

Can't wait to hear your feedback about walking on wet cobblestones (at night).

Aged 73, I travelled the length of Hispanic America last year on a small Honda bike (www.simongandolfi.com and hit the Blog button). I wore standard English Church's leather shoes. Perfect for walking, perfect for riding. Survived tropical downpours, sand storms and snow. Stop at a shoe shine stand and they look new and smart.
