Thanks for the reply. We haven't looked at wholesalers yet; we were looking at a 7 night air/hotel package w/smartours that uses Varig...($999 for r/t and flight b/w buenos aires and rio & 7 nts in pretty good hotel)

I flew varig for the first time to rio with my husband and 7 month old son. For the $ 550 RT was not bad. AA and continental was much more. The only thing was that my seat was broken (but they did let me sit in business). this is a plus. The food (which I usually don't eat) was pretty good. The staff was very nice. The downside of my return trip was that I had RUDE passengers sitting behind me. Two girls dressed in Versace from Sao Paulo utilizing there long legs to lean up against the back of my seat the whole night flight. I complained to the stewardest and nothing was done. When I got off the plain the stewardest had nerve to say to the girls that we were crazy for complaining in Portuguese which he did not realize we understood. But one bad apple doesn't spoile a good airline. I'd recommend it.

I flew Varig on a couple of flights within Brazil and the airline is fine. Coach is crowded like most airlines now days. The service was good and the flight staff was friendly. All my flights were on time.
