Surfing in Costa Rica

Hi all, first time poster.

I'm looking to take a surf lesson on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica this November. Thinking somewhere around Jaco as I drive down the coast. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Samara has terrific surfing and a great little surf school. My son paid $40 for a couple of lessons at Jesse's surf school It included about 10 hours of board time. The guys are GREAT there. Right on the beach, of course.

For off the beaten track surfing, don't forget about Pavones down on Punta Burica. It's super chill.

Dominical is another hot surf spot on the Pacific Coast.

Jaguarman is right... and you can make Samara your base and hit a lot of those southern secret spots. Coyote, Caletas, Witch's Rock, etc.

Since you are looking to take a surf lesson, I assume you are new to this sport. If that is the case, don't try Dominical. It is hard core surf, not for beginners. Same with Pavones, as there are too many reefs/rocks to avoid.
Jaco would be a decent place to take some lessons, but it can get crowded with aggressive Tico sufers who go there from San Jose. And in any case, the surf there is not as consistant as other breaks.
Then, just down the coast is Hermosa, which can also be hairy for beginners, then Dominical, then Pavones.
I think you would be better off going to Samara, as sugessted. Nice little town and good waves to learn on. About 40 minutes north is Nosara (Guiones Beach) which is an excellent place to surf, and also has many, many surf schools. And, it's beach break (sand bottom) which is more forgivig if you should have a bad fall.
Have fun!

Have fun, bellapenguin! Let us know if you need a place in Samara to stay. We rented a great little villa for a week.
