I'm new here but looking for some options so thought I'd ask around for ideas. I'm done with the big push, too young to retire but no need to work anymore and I've put away a good bit of money and want to relocate south somewhere along the Pacific coast where the breeze is fair and Gringos are welcome. All I have on the "need" list is ocean and friendly people.

So tell me where your dream location to “retire” to is and if you know, can property be bought there by foreigners? I have no issue with getting dual citizenship if that helps.

I suggest that you switch over to Amazon . com and search for the books on retirement in Costa Rica. Also start reading A.M. Costa Rica as well as Tico Times online.

I was going to suggest Costa Rica as well. The Manuel Antonio area seems to be very popular with Americans.

Costa Rica comes to mind because of all the Costa Rica fans on this board. There are foregin communities up and down the Pacific coast.

Don't forget Mexico. It's probably the original foreign warm-weather retirement destination for Americans. Numbers are growing in Nicaragua, which still offers the incentives to retirees that Costa Rica did away with 16 years ago. Panama welcomes a lot of retirees too. Gosh, I was just in Uruguay earlier this month, and THEY have asmall but active program for recruiting retirees. I never knew that. The moral of the story is that you don't have to limit yourself to the obvious choices.

Should add I'm cheap and pretty conservative, once I started "saving" it seems to have had an effect on my spending.But I like to live well, so won't be deprived a few luxeries like a Hammock, and thick grass thats easy on the feet.

Lucky you, boogerman. Have you ever heard of the TV show House Hunters International on HGTV? They have shows about moving to different locals, and a lot of them are in warm, tropical climates. It depends on what you want to do there--snorkel/dive, golf, surf, etc. --the different countries seem to have different appeal based on what you want. You could probably check out the shows on the internet. Happy hunting!
