Does anyone know if it is better to pay the $8 per person transportation fee....there are 4 of us. We are staying at Montana De Fuego.

Or is it better to get there on our own by taxi/bus? What is the cost of these options?

By better, I mean cost, but also convenience and reliability.

We will be in CR in 4 days too, but are starting in Punta Islita.

Have you planned your specific activities while you will be staying at Montana De Fuego? (We'll be there July 6, 7 & 8) I'd love to compare notes.

We are also hoping to do the Sky Trek, take a night lava hike, go to Ecotermales for the springs and dinner, hike La Fortuna Falls and possibly go to Tabacon - but are hoping to book tours when we're there, based on what's been recommended on the boards.

I can't be much help on the cost of transportation and reliability, as we had our own car...but if you have questions, we just got back from our 1st CR trip a week ago...and did the Arenal area, including the Sky Trek.

I am not sure where Montana De Fuego is. We stayed at Lost Iguana. The area is great. I'd love to go back again anytime!

We will be at Montana De Fuego July 7 and 8. We booked the canon negro trip, but on advice from this site left the rest to whim.
Where else are you going?
We do 7/5-6 Peace lodge,7/8 MDF,9/10 Arenel, 11/12/13/14 MA,15 San Jose/16 home.....

We will be in Arenal July 8,9,10...then flying to Osa for 4 nights.

I have reserved the Canyoning...I guess we'll wait til we get there to book other activities...we pretty much want to do all the tours you've mentioned, I don't know that we can fit it all in.

We'll be at Arenal the same time...do you change hotels? We wanted to stay at Peace Lodge but they were all booked. We also leave CR on the 16th.
Let's hope for some clear volcano views.

Since we'll be there the 6th, we'll be happy to share with you anything we learn while we're there before you!

Our itinerary is as follows:
July 1 - fly into SJO at night staying at Orquideas Inn (if we get the fax form to secure the room! - having some troubles!)
July 2 - taking an early morning Sansa flight to Punta Islita - staying for 4 nights
July6- taking a ground transfer to 3 nights at Montana de Fuego
July 9- taking transfer to Orquideas Inn
July 10 flying home
