Shangri La Caribe - beach, bug questions...

I'm planning a trip to Playa del Carmen in July, and Shangri-La Caribe is the forerunner right now. I did a search on Shangri-La but didn't find very much recent information. Has anyone stayed there recently? I'm curious, in particular, about the quality of the beach (the aerial on locogringo.com shows some underwater rocks) and the bug situation. Of course, it's in the jungle, but I read a post by someone whose wife awoke with a giant cockroach on her face... Do they have mosquito nets? The pictures on their website didn't show any... If anyone has any feedback, please let me know!

A lot of the SLC posts on this site may be from me, and sorry, it was three years ago I was there so the experience was not recent. I can tell you that I am the kind of person who bugs just seem to find and I had no trouble at all, I do not even remember using bug spray and I did not see any bugs, the rooms were very clean. No mosquito nets. The windows are screened, we slept with them open to the sound of the waves, it was wonderful. And the beach was lovely but I am not certain about rocks in the water.

Thanks, Eileen... That's good to know! Did you have a beachfront room? Did you have a positive experience?

We had an oceanview room on the 3rd level. It had windows on two sides so it got a nice breeze. I thought it was a very good value for what it is and I liked the beach. My husband did not like the fact that there was not AC or TV, so we probably won't go back. The breakfast was very good, the dinners were average so plan to have some meals in town even though dinners are included. I really liked the layout of the resort, the mexican/tropical/barefoot ambiance, the landscaping. We were there for four nights which was a good length of time for us, we like our luxury and were glad to get to a place with AC and a few more creature comforts.

You'll find lots of information abotu Shangri-La Caribe on other sites, even if you don't find it here. Just do a search under the name on whichever forum you find yourself on, or stroll on over to Tripadvisor as they have many reviews there, too.

Thanks, Steve, I'll check out tripadvisor... And thanks, Eileen. I know I won't mind lack of AC and TV, but my boyfriend will miss Sportscenter dreadfully!
