sea turtle hatchery in Mexico
Hi,
I remember seeing on a tv show that there was a sea turtle hatchery near Cancun, I think, where you can watch sea turtles hatch and help them migrate to the ocean. I can't find this anywhere, has anyone heard of it and I would love it if you could give me as much information on it as possible.
Thank you,
R

Hi R,
We were in Akumal in June last year and the turtles were nesting then on the beaches. The enviro people were out on the beaches at night relocating some of their nests. We even helped! It was cool. Then during the day we would be snorkling and see the turtles swimming and eating near the Yal Ku laggon there. The lagoon was really great, but I've heard a few people talking about that there are some crocdiles living in the lagoon now??? Also I've heard some bad things about a person being robbed by some maid at one of the villas there. Stay at an all inclusive and it should be ok.
Leann

Sun Palce in the hotel zone is doing this too. Don't confuse Xpu-Ha Palace's version as altruism tho. They deceptivly bought the inlet where turtles have always laid their eggs by the thousands under the guise of creating a "eco-preserve" and then built a hotel instead (to the horror of ecologists), denying the turtles their habitat. Any stragglers hearty enough to lay their eggs on Xpu-Ha's beach are the remnant of a once-great migration. Xpu-Ha's hatchery is cynical at best.
