Savegre in July? Shillmac
Hi Shillmac,
On another thread you mentioned visiting Savegre this July. I've only gone previously in our winter, when it was dry. Have you typically experienced much rain during your summer visits to that area?
thanks
Jerry

Not Shillmac, but I'll jump in and volunteer that we were at Savegre in late May early June a couple years back.
If memory serves we had one afternoon into evening hard rain in the 3/4 days we were there. It had rained a good bit before our arrival - enough to make one of their trails really muddy according to Marino Chacon. Then of course they had a really wet summer/Fall this past year in parts of CR. So it's pretty difficult to predict. But that was our experience in late Spring of 2004.

Hi Jerry, Hi Glover. . .
Your experience, Glover, may be the more typical one. You know us--in many months of rainy season travel to CR, we seem to miss out of most of the rain! I think dry Oklahoma weather just follows us wherever we go . .
We have been there twice. First time was the very end of June (2004). I was birding with Marino (a morning tour which ended up still going strong at 5:30 in the evening!), and we did get some rain about the time it was starting to get dark. Not one to be deterred, Marino kept us chasing the spotted wood quail until sprinkles and then a downpour (not to mention the encroaching darkness) finally washed us (in the mule) back down to the lodge. I remember it raining for a couple of hours that night and probably on into the night as well. Nothing during the day.
Last year, we were there in July, around the 9th. Nothing until the day we left, when it started sprinkling as we came out of the valley and rained on us a little back into San Jose.
Never one drop that interfered with any activity while at the lodge. Amazing! Of course, there is that "little summer" thing in July, a little dry spell. Perhaps that's partly it.
Molly2, who we met that first year, tells me that the day we left it rained cats and dogs. . or howlers and iguanas. . .
Are you thinking of going in July? We will be there June 23-26 this summer.

Thanks for the updates. I'm 'hoping' to get to Costa Rica for about 10 days in July but still not confirmed yet. My travelling companion fell in love with Costa Rica during her first visit to Rincon de la Vieja and Tamarindo, then MORE in love with Costa Rica during our trip to the central valley and Sarapiqui lowlands, but has not yet experienced the cloud forest.
So this trip I'm hoping to take her to Savegre, then somewhere in the southwest of the country for rain forest and ocean.

Sounds like a good plan! We had a really good time a couple of years ago taking the public bus (backpacking) to Savegre, then down to San Vito where we stayed a couple of nights. You would love Wilson Botanical Garden (OTS place, like La Selva). The birding in this area is pretty darned good!
We took a taxi to Golfito, a panga boat to Puerto Jimenez, then on to Bosque del Cabo for the "luxe" part of the trip! We had such a marvelous time.
I remember Eduardo (the birding guide at BdC) telling me how he hopes to live in San Vito one day. It really is a cool little place. You've probably heard me rant about the $16 per night room with a balcony overlooking the main drag, laundry service, taxes, breakfast included, AC, hot water, and TV! Who could beat a deal like that?!

Let us know if you're interested in trying to cross paths. We'll be there June 22-July 20 (about a week less than I'd prefer!) and I'm working on an itinerary now. All that is for sure is Savegre first, Manuel Antonio after that. July 1-20 is still up in the air, but beginning to fall into place!
