safety in Argentina
My daughter is planning a semester abroad in Rosario, Argentina. We are wondering about the economic crises and concerned about safety issues. We would appreciate any feedback. She is planning on going in August.
Thanks in advance.

I direct a study abroad program for students in Argentina each year. I have never had a problem with safety, but I err on the side of caution in planning and in the advice I give my students.
Petty crime has gone up since the crisis, but the overall crime rate is still much lower than for most parts of Latin America....
Many of outlying parts of Buenos Aires and some of the provinces are more dangerous than the central city of Buenos Aires...but Rosario is a nice town and as far as I can tell relatively safe.
Have you asked whoever sponsers your daughter's program about safety issues? What information do they provide students? Have there been any incidents involving students? Do they live in homestays? If so, what criteria does the program use to select families?
Will she be studying with a U.S. university that takes student groups abroad or traveling independently to study at an Argentine university? Either way, make certain that you have a list of phone numbers you can use to contact her in Argentina and that she knows who to contact in Argentina in case of emergencies--police, fire, hospital, the phone number of an English-speaking physician, 24 hour contact numbers for university officials in Argentina and on her home campus...
She will love Argentina. It is a great country.

I thought of one more thing....Here is a link to the most recent State Department information sheet regarding Argentina. Your daughter's program should provide her with a copy, but in case they haven't or in case she has not shared it with you....try here

Hi drdawggy, I know we agree on the general appreciation of Argentina, I had no clue that you direct a study abroad program for students.!
My husband and I shall be in Uruguay-Argentina till July. A long period of time....once you said that it might be
a good idea to meet with Cintia and Matias . We shall be in touch with them for the hotel reservations and to
organize a trip to Mendoza. I agree once more, I would love to talk to your students too.
It would be and interesting GTG .

I will be in Buenos Aires from May 8-July 11, along with 24 undergrad and grad students. Students will be housed in a residencia in Palermo Viejo and I will be in an apartment in Retiro. Students take their classes at the University of Buenos Aires....the educational consulting group that works with me has set up an itenerary of in-town excursions and several out-of-town overnight trips...including visits to Iguazu and Mendoza.
Let me know how I can contact you and we can discuss getting together, perhaps along with Cintia and Matias.

Hi drdawggy
Since they are going to do the reservations for me in Bs As they will know in which hotel we are staying.
(We are going first to Montevideo and I do not know yet exactly wich days we shall be in Bs As)
I guess the best way will be to get together through wow and it will be fun for all to get together.
