Resort recommendations for 40-something single female

I've been reading through lots of review on this forum and have noted some of the better resorts. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me which ones they think would be better-suited for a female travelling alone. I've narrowed my search down to Playa del Carmen. I'm interested in hanging out on the beach, doing some sight-seeing, good food, meeting interesting people, fitness (Yoga, Pilates & Spinning would be a huge plus but not necessary).
I've never travelled on my own so I'm a bit nervous but desperately need a vacation! Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I can't help with PDC (because I usually go to Puerto Vallarta) but wanted to say an encouraging word about going on a sunny Mexico beach resort vacation on your own... it is fabulous, and addictive ;-)

Thanks, Suze! It was actually from reading your posts that I started to gain courage over doing this. I appreciate the words of encouragement.

Are you interested in staying at an all inclusive resort or not?

I'm leaning towards all-inclusive because there may be more activities to get involved in with other people but I'm open to any suggestions of non-AI.

Right in Playa del Carmen is the Royal Playa del Carmen. It is an adults only and has great food and service and is right on the beach. It's just a five minute walk to 5th Ave. in Playa so you can explore the town on your own.
I don't know where you live, but try checking out Apple Vacations and Fun Jet. They are two of the biggest booking agencies in Mexico and they offer good package rates.

If you don't want an AI, I'd look at la Tortuga. PDC would be a great place to go alone. With La Tortuga, you walk to the beach club and you are close to 5th ave. They serve breakfast as part of your package. They don't have a fitness center, so that you would need to find. The Royal is nice...stayed there last year and would stay again.

Thanks, I'll check out La Tortunga. Royal Playa del Carmen is sold out until the end of Feb.
Had my heart set on Sandso Caracol but just read a review on TripAdvisor of a couple having their safe robbed while they were in town....
