Question on Ferry to Ambergris and Air Flight Weight Limits

How REALLY is the ferry from the mainland to Ambergris--especially for someone who hates to fly? Some posts say it's pretty rough. We will be doing this next February.

Second question is -- is there a weight limit for baggage on the airplane that connects from San Pedro to the Intl Airport? (we know we have to fly that leg for timing purposes) Is it like Costa Rica where they weigh YOU and your luggage? Yikes!
thanks,
Joan

joan, we flew Tropic Air, and it wasn't nearly as restrictive as what we've flown in CR. They didn't weigh us. We could each have two checked bags, plus one carryon. The limits were pretty large. Check out the Tropic Air website for the details. I think each checked bag could be 35 pounds, but doublecheck me. The flight was very smooth and quick, about 15 minutes and very pretty.

We had two 50 pound bags last January, no problem with Tropic Air. If there is too much baggage for the flight, your might come on the next flight (about 15 minutes later). One time Tropic sent a plane with nothing but baggage. Not a big deal.

I don't have a lot of experience with the water taxi, have only taken it a couple of times. It wasn't at all rough. But, it was very crowded and not at all comfortable. Some 'seats' didn't have a back rest. I'd fly.

http://www.tropicair.com/about.html shows the exact baggage info. but like I said they didn't seem very strict about it. Agree with Jean, I would fly. It will all be over very quickly.

It's fine, but it depends on the surf at the time as to whether it's rough. Check the tide tables and determine the "best" time of day to go. Consider the weather and the time of year.

35 pounds? It's an island with beaches. What could you need over 35 pounds.

Pack light!

I always find that the best way to get baggage limits is to check the airline's website: http://www.tropicair.com/about.html . That way there will be NO surprises!

Everyone we talked to who took the ferry said they wish they hadn't. However, none were staying as long as you. FYI- I'm jealous....Enjoy!

SiteC, was it because it was rough or because it took too long? We thought about it, but the flight seemed so quick and easy.

Most said it was long and open to the elements (rain, wind, etc).

Most, if not, all, of the water taxis are now covered boats. One company uses boats that have seats like airplanes have, although I'm not sure they use those boats between Belize City and Ambergris. The others have benches along the sides, and people also sit on a raised area in the center, which unless you're by a pole have no back support.

Although I have, and will use water taxis again, it won't be after I've already been traveling all day to get to Belize City and have a lot of luggage to deal with.
