Playa Del Carmen or Tulum?

I'm planning a last-minute trip and need three nights next week on the Mayan Riviera. On-line I've found Dreams in Tulum with availability and Las Palapas in Playa Del Carmen.

Which would be more fun? It will be my husband and I and two teenage boys, ages 16 and 18.

With two teenage boys I'd say Las Palapas. Right on the beach, close to town and Mamitas beach club if they so choose.

I'm not familiar with the actual hotels, but PDC and Tulum are apples and oranges. PDC is a very lively little city with a beautiful strech of calm, protected beach - great for swimming. Lots and lots of dining and shopping options. Tulum is more of a 'get away from it all' kind of place, with miles of ocean beach, many spots you won't see anyone. The water is open ocean, so it can get a little rough. The town of Tulum is a few miles away from the beach, and just a few blocks long with a handful of fun places to eat.

PDC with teens for sure.

(You might have a hard time finding them to get back on the plane to go home as two teenaged boys will think they died and went to heaven in PDC.)

Haven't been to Las Palapas. However, Dreams Tulum is rather quiet and VERY quiet at night. It's great if that is what you're seeking, but I doubt it would hold much interest for the teen boys.

Also, as far as teenage boys, be aware that topless females are not uncommon at either spot!

Thanks for the info. I'm going to choose PDC.

About the topless--I have no problem with that. I'm just debating whether I should tell them ahead of time or just watch their mouths drop open at their first siting.

Very cool Kate!

I think those kids would get a boat and row there if they knew what they are in for - all of the Gisele Bundchen lookalike Euro girls on the beach.

We go to PDC every year, and have been for awhile. You will ALL have a great time, and don't be surprised if a couple of Mojitos or Margaritas into it, you let the top fly too!
