We saw a harpy eagle from Savagre Lodge several years ago, albiet through a powerful scope... It was here, on our first trip, that we got to meet Mr. and Mrs. shillmac. So there are still more sightings to experience - a harpy eagle, a jaguar -and the shillmacs!

Cattail, you are hilarious! I didn't know you saw a harpy on that trip! How awesome is that! We've got to get together again. . . .
RAC--oh my, what a joy to read! My eyes couldn't gulp it in fast enough. Loved every detail.
Isn't Abraham amazing? And we liked Ulyses, also. You made me want to go back there. Wonderful, wonderful birding.
You nailed it pretty well--there's just something about Bosque del Cabo. It's good stuff. Jealous of your puma sighting! Team Puma will be arriving in June on another quest. . . . .
Thanks again for such a detailed, descriptive, and funny post!

Hey, shillmac! Yup, Marino led us (what was that British guy's name again?) for hours through the rain and muck after that darn bird. We'd no sooner locate it, than it'd fly off, and we'd be chasing after Marino again. After hours of this, wet, shivering and frozen we were excitedly called to the scope and shown a tiny dot wayyyy off on the horizon. It was then that we decided that birders are certifiable.

RAC - just flew back this weekend, thoroughly enjoyed your report and photos and am so glad you liked Iguana Lodge since I recommended it to you last spring. 17 macaws in one morning? Awesome!
We had booked the club rooms and thought they looked fine, but they upgraded us to Villa Villa Kula after someone in another club room complained about the noise from a beach party. That was fine by us, the villa was incredible - and I totally agree, the food at Iguana is some of the best I've ever had in the country.
You lucked out with the Golfo Dulce tour, too. We were there during a "Supermoon" which is not conducive to smooth water...currents were so strong we couldn't even go swimming and never got to see any dolphins, etc.
Loved your description of Bosque Rio Tigre - still on my bucket list for future years. Aren't manakin leks just amazing?! The birding there sounds like some of the best ever.
Puma sighting - WOW! Can't wait to get back to BdC June 27 for the GTG!!

My favorite at BdRT was when we saw a green honeycreeper and a pygmy kingfisher within 1 minute of each other.
You can do the early morning birding tour there from Iguana Lodge, but you'd be getting up around 4:15 to do so.
We're doing Pico Bonito in Honduras this summer and the Pipeline road in Panama next February, so we'll see how the various places compare.

Yes, he's quiet right now, think on a trip to the states. But usually posts one (or more) fantastic photos he's just taken from the office or the blinds or out on a hike. He posts on FB under his name, James Adams in La Ceiba. I would send him a friend request! In fact it was one of his pics (a howler monkey, huge fangs) that pushed me to email shillmac from Nicaragua and demand we get down there.

Wow, what great birding, RAC, thanks for reporting. I'm going to go look at your pictures next! I remember thinking that bayheaded tanager, and also the paradise tanager, are among the most beautiful birds ever. Didn't sound like you had any fear of the puma, just excitement. I mighta been a little nervous.. . . Sounds like we need to get back to CR. We just returned from beautiful Argentina, where we saw lots of interesting birds at wetlands Esteros del Ibera, which we recommend. But now I'm thinking maybe we need to go to Bosque del Rio Tigre, not to mention this new place in Honduras you all are talking about. So many places. .
