mexico and travlers checks

Hi. I have spoken to a few people who have been to Mexico in the last year and they said it is hard to use travlers checks. I have not been to Mexico for a few years, but every time I have gone I used T.C. I feel more safe bringing T.C., but if places do not take them anymore I'll have to bring cash. Does anyone know if you can still use T.C.? We will be in PDC. Thank You.

As in nearly every place in the world, TC in Mexico are an expensive liability.

Of course you can still use them. But plan to go to a bank to cash them (rather than spending them directly in a restaurant or shop) and that there may be a fee and you will need identification with you.

ATM machines are definitely a more convenient method these days.

I can't imagine why you would want to go thru the hassle of travelers checks. Just go to the ATM at Cancun airport, or in downtown PDC, and take out pesos as you need them. There are not as many ATM's in PDC as you would see in the US, but there are a few.

TC are not the best deal, but still very easy to use. You can cash them at a hotel or whatever, but will get a better deal at a bank. If you check rates at casas de cambios some have faily decent rates also. The only difference you may encounter is that some places will no longer cash them without a passport for ID. All this said- ATM's are cheaper and easier. On the other hand I usually carry some TC's as back up. On two occasions I have been glad to have them when for reasons unknown the ATM's would not accept my card for a few days.
