What have you read that you don't like? My husband and I have been to Hedo and now would like to try Desires which looks nice. No place is perfect though.

Hedo and Desires is not even in the same hotel calibur as the ME. Personally, I'm glad the ME went AI. One of the only reasons why we have never stayed there. ME is a very nice, upper scale resort in Cancun. What are in the reviews that are concerning you? You have your AI lovers and your AI haters and everyone in between that cannot be pleased. Take reviews with a grain of salt and have an open mind as food quality and quanity are quite subjective.

i have been reading that the transition period has been rough. there's an awkward system where you have to wait to sign a bill (though you don't have to pay it) after each meal, that they expect real tips on that amount, and that you can't get in at the restaurants that are part of the a.i. (they are booked up.) it just sounds like they are not ready to be a.i. -- but they are. hope it is all not true (though the criticisms seem pretty universal) -- and do feel sure that it will be a beautiful setting.

THat sounds like more of a "meal plan" than all inclusive. When I've gone to resorts and taken their "meal plans" they automatically have added a tip based on the price of the meal. Although we didn't pay extra for the meal, the tips were added to our room charges.

quick report-- returned from the ME and it was absolutely amazing. this was our first 'all-inclusive' so signing for our food did not bother us as it did others. our room (level loft) was wonderful and the deck was huge and like a 2nd bedroom. food was delicious. we only at at the menu/a la carte menus. room service was included and quick and always exceeded expectations. the beach is great there, though not great for body-surfing. they keep the beach and the hotel utterly pristine. one of the things we liked most was that (for level rooms category) we had use of the spa. each evening we would go to the spa-- they would give us a locker, robe, slippers & water-- and we would hit the sauna, jetted hot tub and cold water ritual (with the best view in the hotel.) it was wonderful.
many complained that you have to rent bali beds on the beach, but it wasn't a problem for us. we were happy on regular chairs, or on the sand-- and did rent a bed one day. it was worth it. comfy and service and our own little world. if it was free, they would have all been grabbed at 6 in the morning, and we never could have experienced it. they are huge-- no hotel can have enough for even 1/4 of the guests.
we hope to return to the me next year. the whole week was divine; we never wanted to leave-- and pretty much didn't. (very unusual for us.)

Sounds great. Glad you had a good time. I never understood why some people get so upset/impatient signing for food and drinks. I never thought it was a big deal either.
