Mata Chica or Victoria House
We are planning a late October/early November honeymoon in Ambergris Caye. We have narrowed our stay to Mata Chica and Victoria House. We want privacy and intimacy, but do plan on going into San Pedro a little. Any suggestions?

We were on Ambergris in February and I would definitely vote for Victoria House which looked beautiful and was private. We went to Mambo at Mata Chica for dinner. You have to go by boat which is about a 20-minute ride one way and which was quite an experience. The boat back was about an hour late and we had to hold a tarp over our heads to keep the water off as the ocean was quite rough from the wind. Victoria House is much more convenient and accessible to town. Make sure you have dinner at Capricorn; it was beautiful, the boatride there was great and provided by the hotel, and the food was excellent. Have a great time! P.S. I had an coupon from the internet for a free glass of champagne with dinner at Mambo. Much to my surprise, with four diners paying big bucks for dinner, the waitress brought one glass of champagne to me! The food was overpriced and you have to arrange and pay for your own transportation.

Either could be great -- it just depends on what you want. Mata Chica is all cabanas, whereas Victoria House has a variety of accommodations -- some motel-like rooms, other rooms, a few cabanas and the owners' villas. Victoria House does have a pool, which Mata Chica doesn't. And as noted, Victoria House is less remote and on the South End so it would be a lot easier to go to dinner at one of many different places... and Ambergris Caye has some wonderful restaurants.

--Lan Sluder

Thank you for all of your responses. We decided on Victoria House. Although, Victoria House is closed when we will be on our honeymoon and we are not sure we want to be that far North of town (as in Mata Chica). Has anyone heard of or been to Banyon Bay? Any other suggestions of where to stay?

I've stayed at Banyan Bay, and it's absolutely great. Huge suites, full kitchens, beautifully decorated, big pool, nice beach. We rate it 4 and a half stars in our guide to Ambergris Caye.

The only disadvantage for honeymooners is that it only has two-bedroom units.

--Lan Sluder
