Machu Picchu/Peru in Late December

We would like to take a trip to Machu Picchu and Peru in late December/early January, but are wary as we have read that this is the "heavy rain" season. From anyone's experience is this true or should we wait until a better time. We would hate to hit the mountains only to be rained or fogged out! Thanks in advance!

One of my best friends is Peruvian and has always warned others against going to MP during the middle of the rainy season. It's okay right at the beginning and end, but not otherwise.

On a somewhat related note, in case you are looking for a trip to Latin America in late December, I had a fabulous time in late December/early January in Torres del Paine, Chile.
