Long Caye, Belize-does it exist?

Hi,

We are thinking of going to Long Caye Island in Belize. We would like to snorkel and get some scuba lessons. I am really looking forward to peace and quiet, so no nightlife isn't such a big deal. We are looking at staying at Calypso Beach Retreat, but can't find any info on it. Thanks in advance.

I think there are at least 2 Long Cayes off Belize - Lighthouse Reef and Glover's Atoll where Slickrock bases; can't help you more than that, but you could check out www.belizeforum.com (search first, then ask). Happy trails!

Many Long Cayes in Belize, but the one you refer to is in Lighthouse Reef atoll and this island also advertises a state of the art medical center and I doubt theres an ace bandage on the whole island. I'd check their status with the Belize Tourist Board www.travelbelize.org Otherwise, stay at the lodge in LHR named for the atoll, or closer at Turneffe atoll or on Glovers, further south. I can strongly recommend those.

Thanks for the replies. I looked on belizeforum.com and couldn't find much information there either. Lighthouse Reef Resort looks like it's going to be under construction until 2008. I wrote the B&B directly so maybe that will shed some light.

There are indeed a few Long Caye’s. It does sound like you are talking about the one in the Lighthouse atoll.

You may wish to simply stay on Ambergris Caye and venture from there.

We just returned from a stay on Ambergris Caye and, as snorkelers, went along with a dive trip to Blue Hole.
As part of that trip, you can snorkel Long Caye (the Aquarium).
This snorkel was fantastic. Tons of fish. I should have some pictures posted in a day or so on my web site
http://www.users.ties2.net/~dkram/

There also is great snorkeling right off of Ambergris Caye (AC).

You can also get scuba certified on AC and then scuba a number of these places as well. However, if you first get certified on AC, you probably do NOT want to dive Blue Hole. Too much for most beginners. While we were there, a novice did that dive and end up almost dying. The dive master saved his life and he ended up in the hyperbaric for a number of days.

We loved out stay on AC.
Feel free to email me directly.

Well it looks like we will stay on Ambergris after all. Calypso Beach Retreat on Long Caye looks lovely but you have to have 4 people in your party to go diving and/or get scuba certs. We are going to book with the Palms. The saga continues ! Thanks again for all of your replies.
