Well, duh, I should have mentioned that. Sorry, Jeff.

Phoenix. The lowest fares I'm seeing for Oct/Nov seem to be running about $550 or so.

You could check out the language school on Lago Apoyo: http://www.gaianicaragua.org/

I've read some good reviews and have considered studying there but I keep choosing places in the mountains in other countries to beat the heat.

I highly recommend Spanish School Catarina (http://spanishschoolcatarina.com/)if you want to learn Spanish. The school was recently started up in Catarina (one of the pueblos blancos above Laguna de Apoyo). It is run by two very experienced Nicaraguan spanish teachers.

I have been to two spanish schools in Guatemala, one in Mexico, and one in Nicaragua. The teachers at Spanish School Catarina are without a doubt the best I have ever had, and are humble, friendly, and all around amazing people. The prices are great, they offer an above average variety of activities, and are truly committed to ensuring every student has a great experience.

I could go on for hours about how great I think the school is, but I think you get the point! Have a great trip - Nicaragua is fantastic!

Well, the trip is booked...early February thru early March. A good use of some old USAir airmiles I had laying around that were getting ready to expire. What I'm thinking about is a week in one school, a week in another, a week in yet another; perhaps Leon, Granada, and SJDS. I'll see a bit of the country that way.
